Personality & Traits

General Overview Galen is quiet but very intelligent for his age. Due to a form of Dyslexia, Galen was never one for reading- unlike his twin who soaked up everything the Harper smuggled to her- however he soaked up anything practical that he was shown. He is known for being unfailingly polite to women and has a soft spot for orphans like himself. Growing up, it was often rumored that he and his twin sister had a strange bond that bordered on telepathic, as the two of them often never needed words to know what the other was thinking or when one of them (usually Nadia) had gotten into trouble and needed a bailout! Due to their poverty, Nadia and Galen often shared a room- which led to talk of the nastier sort from the ladies that Galen spurned. For although Galen was more than handsome enough to easily follow in his father’s footsteps, he often held himself apart from the rest so as to better take care of his twin.

Galen lavishes Nadia with love and attention, and woe to anyone seeking to ‘play’ with her or otherwise rough her up. He will show no mercy to anyone, and it was rumored that he was even posed to kill the Lord Holder once it became known that the former’s roving eye had fallen upon his twin.

The only man that Galen respected growing up was the Lord Holder’s Harper- the stern and rather taciturn Mikeal, although that was more for the sake of his twin than out of genuine liking for the man.
Sexuality Heterosexual

History

History Galen and his twin sister Nadia were born the products of their Lord Holder raping their mother during a night of drunken debauchery- a common enough occurrence in the Northern hold where they were born. Their mother Selene had been known as a beauty in the Hold- although again that was not saying much. It was often said that so long as a woman was clean and had all her teeth, that was good enough to catch the Lord Holder’s wandering eye. Selene was considered simpleminded, which meant her days were filled with the work even the lowest of the drudges wouldn’t touch. Sympathy was not offered when Selene was discovered to be pregnant. Nor when the woman gave birth alone in the dirty hovel that she shared with the aging watchweyr- who was the only creature that had ever offered Selene, and later the twins, any kind of unconditional love

The birth was hard on Selene, but in her own simple way- she loved her babies. She didn’t even care when Nadia was born weaker than her brother and took longer to Weald than the average child.

That love was repaid a thousand-fold once the twins had grown up enough, Galen in particular was careful to never raise his voice around Selene and was quite gentle around their weak mother. Men that sniffed around offering food or other trinkets were driven away by kicks and well-thrown rocks.

Right before they were to start lessons with the Harper, their mother caught the winter sickness and died. Now on their own, Galen’s only comfort was holding Nadia in his arms at night when they both sought sleep.

It did not take long for Nadia to catch the attention of the Harper, who would occasionally slip them food- as well as the occasional book for the knowledge hungry Nadia. Galen never did better than average in his lessons- though he could memorize anything Nadia read to him enough to get by.

The Watchweyr was well cared for by both the twins, but whenever a dragon visited Galen would follow a wobbly Nadia as she hobbled on crutches, always with some tidbit to toss into the visiting dragon’s mouth.

As time went on word was passed within the various weyrs of the poor crippled girl with a love for dragons. Most of the dragonriders were tolerant of this, but as Nadia grew to womanhood Galen’s protective presence grew more and more marked. Even the dragons noted that the boy was special, but his heart was slowly growing hard.

No one in the Weyr knew just how dire the twins’ situation was about to get.

Galen’s worst fears- indeed, his greatest nightmare- came to pass just after their sixteenth birthday. His twin was helping the Harper copy some records when the Lord Holder unfortunately caught sight of the young woman.

Although Nadia would not speak of what occurred- save to assure her twin that her maidenhead remained intact in a voice that shook despite her clear efforts to hide it from her twin- the chill of foreboding snaked down his spine. He could read between the lines of what wasn’t said well enough.

The next day, Galen snuck out of bed with a knife and the ragged remains of a net in hand. Although not driven to rashness, Galen was not above stealing when it came to Nadia.

He had heard though the gossip in the kitchen that a fire lizard nest was found near by- the Holder Lord had commanded that the eggs belonged to him and that no one was to approach until the eggs were hard enough to retrieve for himself.

Galen was bound and determined to steal one for Nadia’s sake. He hoped that a fire lizard would be enough to protect his sister from the Lord Holder’s libido.

Not to mention that Nadia would finally have a little dragon of her own to love.

A fine plan in theory to a sixteen year old boy, but a harder thing to accomplish in fact- Galen hadn’t planned on the attacking werries.

Fortunately for him, a passing dragonrider from River Cove had only just come from Between and was passing over the beach.

Upon his rescue the dragon claimed Galen as a candidate.

Galen struck a deal. He would go, but only if Nadia could come too- with an egg.
