K'ron smiled a bit as he watched Raen sleeping soundly beside Nerlyn. He quietly slipped out of the weyr not wanting to wake them. As he headed for the dining cavern he caught sight of a familiar face.
“Good morning, N'raen.”
N'raen looked up as he heard a voice saying good morning to him. He had just come down from night shift so was looking looking a little tired. “Morning K’ron? Breakfast by yourself?” He wondered not seeing his daughter or grandson with the bronze rider.
Oh, K'ron knew that look. Night watch always did that to a person. “Yeah. Raen was still sound asleep curled against Nerlyn. I didn't have the heart to wake them.”
The blue rider smiled a little. “I hope Nerlyn has later duties or you will be in trouble for leaving them there no matter how much heart you did not have.” He teased. “I suspect your son tired himself out as he did not sleep well for me and Lyna.” The man said thinking back 2 nights to when he and Lyna had, had the boy to allow Nerlyn and K’ron to go to the ball.
“She does. I am not making that mistake again.” He had let her over sleep once and never again. “I'm sure he is. He played hard yesterday too.” he hadn't been surprised that Raen hadn't slept well for his grandparents. The boy was like that.
The older man laughed, slapping him on the back fondly. He was good for his eldest despite all their ups and downs, he blunted her sharp edges and the blue rider was indebted to the man for keeping her alive when she lost her green. “Come on Bronze Rider, let's break out fast before it gets too busy and I can get to my bed.” He stated
K'ron chuckled. He liked Nerlyn’s family and were glad they were all still close. “Sounds good to me. I'm sure you could use some rest after night watch.”
“I could there is only so much staring around I can do pre dawn. No one is coming and going,” N’raen said despite the early start to the day he was still good natured. He led the way to the food hot plates. “What do you have planned for the day?” He asked, looking around the quiet cavern. There was still a candlemark before the rush.
“That is true. Makes it really hard to focus,” he agreed. Night watches were hard. K'ron collected a plate and a mug before looking at their food options. “Just some time with Raen while Nerlyn does her duties.”
“It is with a great sleeping blue with you so you cannot even talk to him.” He rolled his eyes as he grabbed up some rolls, butter and strange looking jam to eat. He did not fancy porridge so bread it was. He took up a chair nearest the foot incase he wanted more but it was warmer in the early morning chill of the cavern.
“Sounds right,” K'ron chuckled, getting some porridge and adding a sweetener to it. “They sleep while we watch.” Tyreth did that too when they had night shift. He took a seat with N'raen and sipped on his klah.
The blue rider nodded starting to make his sandwiches . “Typical but how was the ball? And how come you have a Raen filled day?” He asked out of interest as it was normally Nerlyn having the boy whilst K’ron was busier.
“The ball was a lot of fun. I haven't danced and laughed so much in a long time. Nerlyn seemed to really enjoy it as well.” K'ron shrugged a shoulder. “Perks of being the wingleader. I gave my wing a couple days off after the Gather before we start up again tomorrow.”
“Should have stuck with you instead of the Weyrleader.” The older man commented with a smirk knowing he would not change wings for anything. Being in A’ren’s wing had always suited him better than any other wingleader he had in over 20 turns. He knew where he stood with the man, and the man respected each wing rider as individuals. “Nerlyn having a good sevenday?” He wondered raising his gaze pointedly.
The bronze rider chuckled. “I would gladly have you in my wing but I am pretty sure A'ren wouldn't let you go,” he smiled, knowing N'raen fit into that wing quite well. K'ron glanced in the direction of his weyr. “So far,” he answered. “Think we've got things settled down again.” There had been a time not long ago that things had gone a bit crazy.
The blue rider got the undertone that things had taken a turn recently that needed to be resettled. “That is good to hear for you all and the baby.” He said hinting that he knew about his eldest and her pregnancy. “Your son told myself and Lyna. Congratulations.” N’raen smiled that the boy had no ability to keep a secret.
K'ron shook his head with a smile. “Raen was very excited. I am glad he told you and thank you. Ner and I are thrilled. We just wanted to wait a little bit and make sure everything was good,” he admitted.
“You could wait to the babe is born to tell me and I would just be thrilled that Nerlyn is healthy.” The blue rider stated honestly. He never worried about Neilla and Cathlyn like he did his dragonless rider daughter.
“Raen never would have kept the secret that long,” K'ron laughed, thinking about his son. He nodded. “She is doing well. Much better then with Raen,” he admitted in relief.
“She is not in a state of exhaustion. I have no idea what she used to do to get in that state but it was not healthy no matter how many sharp words we had and her telling me she was doing her duty.” The blue rider took a bite thoughtfully, his eldest had always burned too hot and fast even as a child. “Her mind might wander on occasion but she is healthier in body if she can just stay out of trouble.”
K'ron nodded. It made sense now why she had been that way but he couldn't say anything unless the Weyrleaders gave him the okay. “She can be a bit hard headed,” he chuckled. They had had some words as well. “she is definitely much better. Stay out of trouble? You do realize this is Nerlyn we're talking about,” he chuckled.
“She gets that from her mother.” Lyna would kill him in his sleep for saying that but that fire did not come from him. “A father.. even a dragon rider likes to believe that his first born will survive the turn. She causes me more worries than the girls fighting thread.” N’raen grinned as he saw Raen racing across the dining cavern minus Nerlyn. “A dragonet coming your way.”
“Lyna won't hear that from me,” K'ron laughed. He could also see why Nerlyn worried him more than his other daughters. Nerlyn was a spitfire for sure. K’ron looked over. “Raen?” He asked in surprise when he saw his son. “What are you doing here? Where's mommy?” He asked, scooping the boy up.
“The Weyrleader told me to run until I found you here as mama felt sick and ran into the toilets outside.” Raen said, looking a little concerned.
K'ron cringed. That wasn't good. “She's okay, buddy,” he promised his son. “And you did the right thing.”
N’raen smiled a little and offered the boy one of his jam sandwiches with Raen instantly perked up at. A few minutes later Nerlyn appeared with a few whispered words of thanks to her companion - the Weyrleader. She looked a little washed out and pale but happy enough in her dolphineer uniform. “Sorry… good boy listening to the Weyrleader.” She praised as N’raen rose to get her some breakfast
A'ren didn't leave Nerlyn’s side until he knew she was alright. K'ron smiled at his mate. He knew she had bouts like that and wished he could do more to help her. “Morning, love. Feeling a bit better?”
“Wish I had stayed in bed but someone was hungry…. And already has food.” Nerlyn looked tired but smiled at the fact the boy was already eating and happily sat with his father for once instead of curled around her. “That was not embarrassing at all, nearly throwing up on the Weyrleader.”
“Wouldn't be the first time I've had that happen,” A'ren assured Nerlyn before he walked off.
“You were both sound asleep when I slipped out and I didn't want to disturb you. Guess I should have woke you guys up,” K'ron apologized, looking down at Raen.
“We were sound asleep until we weren’t.” She shrugged a little with a smile as N’raen returned with a mug of klah and several rolls with different toppings. Nerlyn raised an eyebrow.
“Thank you dad.” Nerlyn said smiling a little. The blue rider smiled back, he was not sure he was ever going to get used to being called that. Nerlyn had taken to calling him and Lyna dad and mum since becoming Dragonless.
“Did you wake mommy up?” K'ron asked his son as wrapped his arms around the boy. “I’m sorry I wasn't there. I thought you would enjoy the extra time to sleep.” next time he would take Raen.
Raen shrugged guiltily before Nerlyn lifted his chin to make the boy look at her.
“He was whispering how much he loved me and how much he loved his father so yes he woke me up and no I would not change it. It was the perfect wake up” Nerlyn said quietly before she turned to savoured the klah. “I enjoyed the extra half a candlemark or so snuggled up with someone who somehow got into our bed in the night.” She could not remember if she brought the boy into bed with her in the night or whether he snuck in but it had been nice to wake up like that. The blue rider watched Nerlyn as if seeing and person before he glanced to K’ron and smiled more.
“Well children, all this talk of bed and sleep is making me want to go to bed. So I will see you later.” He rose, inclining his head to K’ron looking tired. “Wingleader. Nerlyn. Raen.”
“That certainly isn't a bad way to wake up,” K'ron agreed, kissing his son's hair. The bronze rider shook his head. “Wish I could answer that for you. When I woke up he was already curled up in bed with us.” He honestly didn't remember their son coming in.
K'ron smiled at N'raen. “Sleep well. We'll see you later,” he answered.
“Bye grandda.” The boy called as the blue rider started to gather his plates.
“Leave it, I'll sort it.” Nerlyn assured smiling at the man as he nodded and left them to it. Raen laughed as he returned to his food.
“I woke up and mama was on the sofa so I brought her to bed and snuggled.” The boy admitted smiling. Nerlyn raised an eyebrow and she could not remember falling asleep in sofa.
K'ron loved that Raen got to know his family. Not that growing up in the crèche had been bad. Far from it. But this felt special.
The bronze rider raised a brow at his mate. “Well that explains it. Thank you for bringing mommy to bed, kiddo.”
Nerlyn shrugged. She could not remember going to bed but a lot of nights were like that recently. “I must have fallen asleep looking at the wreckage plans.” She admitted nibbling at the bread she was having for her breakfast.
“She was tired.” Raen assured leaning close to K’ron to whisper. “Tyreth suggested it.”
That made sense. K'ron had seen Nerlyn fall asleep over those plans many times. He was surprised by his son's words. “Did he now?”
):i like your little,:( the bronze yawned. ):and your mate.:(
“He speaks to me sometimes.” Raen commented not understand the significance of that at all. The boy wiggled off the bronze rider's lap to sit on the bench before he remembered that Nerlyn was off to Dolphin Hall for the day and it was just going to be them. “What are we doing today?” He wondered.
K'ron hadn't realized that. Tyreth had never said anything. “Well that is kind of him. He says he likes you.” He glanced over at Nerlyn, wondering how she felt about his bronze talking to their son. “Well Ty could use a bath,” he suggested.
Nerlyn glanced over sensing his eyes on her and smiled with a shrug. “As he should. Our dragonet is perfect.” Nerlyn said picking at the bread a little more at least eating some of it between gulps of klah.
“And I can help right?” Raen loved helping with bathing the dragons.
“That he is,” the bronze rider chuckled. He didn't doubt that at all. He had just been surprised to hear Tyreth talked with Raen.
“Of course you can. You know Ty's favorite spot to be scratched,” he smiled at his son.
Raen looked satisfied with that answer and quickly set about eating his food and the rolls that Nerlyn offered. “Well sounds like you both have a good day planned. I will try and be back for the evening meal but do not wait around for me okay.”
“But…” Raen started.
“I will try little one but I have a trip out to the islands.” She reminded him softly.
The bronze rider had nearly forgotten that too. He did nod though. “You be careful, Ner. And you little man, maybe we can talk T'mil and Cathlyn into having the evening meal with us,” he suggested.
“And Neilla?” Raen wondered, hopeful. He had not seen much of her in the last seven day or so. Nerlyn rose gathering her items and then N’raen’s items quietly. She did try and stay safe. It just sometimes did not work that way.
“And Neilla too,” K'ron agreed. He smiled at his mate as she gathered up the dishes. He did know she tried to be careful. Just like when they flew Thread some things you just couldn't help.
“I will see you both later. Have the best day together.” She told them both firmly kissing her finger pressing it to Raen’s cheek as the boy stood up on the bench and hugged Nerlyn for a long moment before he let her go.
“See you later, love,” K'ron smiled. He loved watching Raen with his mother. It still amazed him sometimes that they had a family.
Nerlyn squeezed his arm as she passed by him. She would miss the day together but it would be nice for them to spend time together.
