Location: High Reaches
Timeline: m3 d19
Laliy managed to finish her lessons a bit early and left Micayith curled up sleeping in her little cove. The gold dragonet would be happy for a bit while Laliy went to meet the newcomers. Micayith had informed her they had arrived but Laliy hadn't had time to meet them yet with her lessons.
So that was what she was doing now. She headed for the records room as she knew that was why they were there. Laliy stopped outside the door and knocked.
Lana looked up at the knocking and glanced at the 3 men in the room. The blue rider having stayed to lug boxes down for the Weyrwoman. He was intrigued by what they were looking for “Come in?” Lana called as she stood from the table and pulled off her glasses in a vain attempt to not highlight her scars or the fact she felt vulnerable with only her flight gear.
K'ron raised a brow at the knock. Who could possibly be knocking?
Laliy shifted a little as she waited. When Lana called she carefully pushed the door open and stepped inside. “I do hope I am not interrupting,” she said, nodding a hello to the blue rider.
Lana smiled brightly and stepped forward to take the girl's hands in her own. “You can only be Weyrwoman Laliy.” Lana said brightly, pulling her into the room more as V’ros bowed slightly. It felt strange bowing to such a young girl but she was a queen rider despite her young age.
K'ron bowed as well. Lana hadn't been joking when she said High Reaches Weyrwoman was young.
Laliy smiled brightly as Lana took her hands. “That would be me. I do apologize I wasn't here to meet you three.”
“You had your studies. I do remember those days.” Lana had been fortunate to have a Weyrwoman until the last moment where she had passed away leaving her alone to face the challenges of leading a Weyr. “This is K’ron one of Ricer Cove’s Wingleaders and V’ros our Weyrlingmaster 2nd.” Land introduced the men smiling at K'rei hoping he would relax a little now.
“It is a pleasure to meet you, Weyrwoman,” K'ron said.
Laliy blinked in surprise. She hadn’t realized that such high ranking riders were coming. “I do hope you are comfortable and being taken care of. Please let me know if you need anything.”
“We are quite content with the records and K'rei has shown us the weyrs we are using whilst here so our 3 dragons are happy too as they are warm again.” Lana assured taking a look around and saw the blinking of surprise. Had the Weyrleader not told her who was coming with her? “Would you like some klah?”
Laliy glanced at K'rei and smiled. “Thank you, K'rei. And I am glad your dragons are comfortable again. If you need anything else please do not hesitate to ask.”
K'ron nodded. “We have been well taken care of. Thank you Weyrwoman.”
Despite no answer Lana pour the girl a mug of klah and put it down in front of her. She could remember weyrlinghood. ”Here. Take a seat and tell us about your studies.” Lana offered and indicated that the riders from River Cove went back to looking at records.
}: Micayith is happy. Confused at another Queen but happy. :{ Kalaith confirmed softly laughing a little. That was nice to hear at the very least.
Laliy took the offered seat and picked up the mug of klah. She hadn’t realized she had completely missed Lana’s question. Some gold rider she was turning out to be. The teen nodded a bit as K'rei moved with K'ron and V'ros back to the hides. “What would you like to know?” She asked curiously.
“I just want to hear how things are going. It must be hard without other queen riders. I was lucky enough I had someone to guide me for most of my weyrlinghood.” Lana commented sitting back glancing to V’ros. “And I had great Weyrlingmasters.”
“I stopped her sleepwalking the first few nights, didn't I Weyrwoman?” V’ros said lightly. Lana smiled a little and nodded.
“That you did V’ros.” Lana smiled a little more at the memory.
The young gold rider shrugged a shoulder. “The lessons are good. I enjoy the learning. But yes it is hard. No one really understands the gold dragons or how to give me advice on them,” she admitted. “The Weyrleader and Weyrlingmaster try, but it's just not the same.” Laliy hoped she wasn't speaking out of turn. Lana had asked. “I have never spoken to another gold rider.” She smiled at V'ros. “I am sure she appreciated that.”
Lana frowned softly. That was frustrating to say the least for the girl but also surprising that none of the northern queens had come to check or visit. This would cause so many issues without care and attention. “It is not the same at all.” V’ros agreed before he turned away carrying on with what he was doing.
“Ask your questions.” Lana assured gently.
Laliy pressed her lips together. She felt a bit odd asking but she also didn't understand. She wasn't even sure where to start. “I am a bit confused about everything,” she admitted slowly. “I mean I know Mic is a gold and important to the Weyr but I grew up on a ship. I don't know much about being a gold rider.”
“Well we lead the queens wing, we maintain the dragon population, we look after the day to day running of the Weyr in regards to children and lower caverns among many other things that we do.” Lana went into telling the woman. “So my usual schedule on a non thread fall day is I check in with the head women or her second first thing for any issues overnight after breakfast, I check in with the other queen riders whether they are junior, senior or weyrlings, Lunch, hidework, drills and then evening meeting with the women of the lower cavern or crafters.” It was a broad routine but it gave the scale of what the Weyrwoman was to a Weyr.
Laliy listened quietly, her eyes growing wide. She had never dreamed there would be that much to keep track of and make sure ran smoothly. “That is a lot,” she whispered, not sure she could actually do all that. Not without guidance anyway.
“It is but you’ll have support to do it. Your head woman is efficient? K'rei?” Lana wondered not wanting to make the girl worry more as she turned to the blue rider to check his opinion. It was a lot but you found your rhythm with it all. Lana only felt she had a handle on it all in the last couple of turns.
K'rei looked up from a hide he had been looking at when Lana questioned him. “she is,” he answered. “I haven't heard any complaints.” Of course he was just a blue rider.
Laliy sighed softly. “But does anyone really understand how to be a gold rider but another gold rider?” She asked curiously. She was certainly missing that help.
“No they do not but it does not mean there are not people who support us. We are not just able to do it alone, we basically run the ship alongside the Captain. In a good Weyr you are co Captains.” She said using ship terms that the girl might understand. The dragons knew what they were doing but boy did they make it difficult with timings some times.
Laliy considered that for a moment. “Okay,” she agreed quietly. “Maybe I can do it.” She was still a bit uncertain. It was all so new and she didn't know anything about it. She had spoken with the Weyrleader briefly but he had a lot on his te.plate
“You can do it. A dragon would not have chosen you if you could not.” Lana said lightly. It was a little lie to get the girl to believe herself a little more. Lana could not let the girl fail or be a lazy queen rider, this Weyr relied on her.
}: She is not lazy. :{ Kalaith assured. }: Micayith is very proud :{
The girl smiled a bit. “Thank you,” she answered. “I am going to try.” There was so much to learn and so much she didn't understand but she wasn't one to quit. “Really? They never choose wrong? That is good to know.”
“Nope. Even when the rider does impossible things to drive their Weyrleaders to the point of wishing they could send them elsewhere, are they wrong.” Lana assured quietly not moving to glance at either bronze rider. “Every dragonet deserves a chance so how could that be wrong?”
Laliy hadn't thought about it like that before. “Oh,” she said thoughtfully. “But how do I keep from being one of those lazy riders or knowing what to do?”
K'ron glanced at V'ros with a chuckle. Yeah he wasn't commenting on that one.
V’ros offered a smile and shrug. He was not commenting either as he had sent himself away. “You are a weyrling. You will make mistakes but you seem to be doing a great job now Micayith is happy. You seem to be well adjusted for the most part.” Lana said smiling revealing that the little gold had been talking to the much bigger gold. “Things do get better.”
Laliy nodded. She knew making mistakes helped one learn. She looked at Lana in surprise. “Mic has been talking to you?” She asked curiously. Her little gold hadn't said anything to her, but she could feel the happiness radiating from her. “What if I have more questions?” She asked. Laliy still wasn't sure about being cut out to lead.
“Kalaith and her have been talking. It’s been a while since she has met a Weyrling Queen. The last one was her daughter a few turns ago.” Lana said thinking of Jena and Zalyith. “We are here for a couple of days.” Lana assured. “Can ask me anytime just get Micayith to ask Kalaith to speak to us.”
Laliy seemed to light up when Lana said they would be there for a couple days. That meant she had a little time with another gold rider. “Thank you kindly, Weyrwoman. I do hope we are able to speak more.” She had so many questions and had no idea what to expect in the future.
Lana nodded smiling at the way the girl lit up at the notion of being able to discuss more. “But if you excuse me now though I have to read a lot of things.” She indicated the pile of hides and papers with a sigh. She really was her own worst enemy sometimes.
“Oh of course. I should get back to Micayith. Let me know if there is anything you need.” The girl got to her feet to head back to her dragon.
