K'rei lifted another stack of hides to bring over to Lana at the table. He blew out a soft breath. There were a lot of hides. He had never honestly realized how many hides were in the record room.
“Have you ever been able to find anything to help you, Weyrwoman?” He asked curiously. He still wasn't completely sure what the southern riders were hoping to find.
Lana looked at the blue rider and shook her head sadly and took her glassed off rubbing her face a little. She was trusting this blue rider a little more now it was just them in the records room as she had sent both bronze riders despite both of their reluctances to be alone together and leave her alone with a northern rider. “Not really. You should have gone with them to get some food though K’rei.”
The blue rider shrugged a bit. She looked tired to him and that couldn't be good. “I'm fine. I'll grab something in a little bit,” he promised. “Do you need anything though? Either I can get it or Rylin can,” he offered as his blue firelizard chirped from the top of a stack of hides.
“No, I am fine. It’s the time difference and looking at all of this.” She indicated all around them. “I am also not trying to cause tensions around the Weyr. But tell me blue rider how are things really here?” She wondered quietly, Kalaith had gotten that there was tensions but she could not pin down to what.
K'rei nodded. If she said she was okay then he would believe her. He hesitated, not wanting to make trouble. “It's not the best,” he admitted. “The Weyrleader is trying but it isn't the same as having an adult gold around.”
Lana could see the loyalty flicker across his face that he did not want to speak poorly of his Weyr but Lana wanted to help if she could which was why she had chosen High Reaches. “What exactly is the problem?” Lana wondered quietly.
He sighed softly. “There are a lot of things,” he admitted. He did feel bad talking about his Weyr. “I think everyone is feeling a bit lost without their Weyrwoman and the sudden loss of her didn't help. Not to mention some don't respect the Weyrleader as much without his Weyrwoman.”
“Of course they won’t.” Lana said with a roll of her eyes thinking it would be why S’cir looked so stressed and strained. It would be the bronze riders making things difficult for him. “They will believe there should be a council but that does not always work, especially with a weyrling gold pair. And this won’t be an easy fix as the girl is too young for the dragon to rise for at least 2 turns.”
K'rei slowly nodded. “That's what I was afraid of,” he sighed. He did feel bad for their young gold rider pair and the poor Weyrleader. “It is definitely a bit of a mess right now “
“Sit K’rei. Tell me about yourself.” Lana offered thinking that they needed another conversation to off set the bad.
The blue rider sank into one of the empty chairs. Rylin glided over to land on his shoulder, studying the Weyrwoman curiously. “What would you like to know?”
“You do not look like you grew up in the north.” Lana said edging her bets a little. He looked like a southerner or at least a northerner from the south. He looked out of place compared to the other riders she had met her looked at her as if they wanted her in their bed or wanted her gone.
He shook his head a bit. “I grew up at Dolphin Bay Hold,” he answered. “Only came here when I was found on Search. Guess I've always been more of a water person than this snow and ice.” He missed his family and the dolphins. Not that he didn't love Mantith.
“So why have you never left? You are a fully grown rider you can ask for a transfer any time you want.” Lana reminded quietly as she found something interesting in a hide and sat up a little more putting her glasses back on.
“I had a mate here until a couple Turns ago,” he admitted, not wanting to think about Talyn. “And I guess since I just hadn't thought about it,” he admitted. He had tried to bury himself in other things. He raised a brow. “Did you find something?””
“I am sorry.” Lana said looking up and noticed the look around him suddenly. She had seen that look a lot recently at River Cove thanks to people leaving the Weyr. It had left the Weyr a lot less stable but they were Dragon Riders and it would soon pick up. “Possibly.” She admitted holding out old fall reports that stated a timing event to meet the thread at dawn instead of the predicted noon. “I had always thought timing was a legend or something.”
“Thank you.” He chose not to expand on that. It wasn't like he was the only one who had lost a mate. K'rei frowned she slid the report to him. He searched through it before nodding. “I know it's been done. Actually my wing did it once during a particularly bad Fall,” he admitted.
“What…” Lana paled as she looked at the man. “The north knows how to do this?” She demanded feeling embarrassed and dumb for asking a blue rider. “The south does not have this knowledge.”
K'rei nodded slowly. “We have been advised to only do it when our wing leaders and the Weyrleader give us permission,” he said. “But yes we have used it. It is definitely not a simple thing to accomplish.” He was surprised by her words. “You don't? I wonder why.”
“It’s lost knowledge I guess.” Lana grew quiet and looked at the man. “We only discovered it due to K’ron’s mate doing it for turns in secret.””
He thought for a minute. “I honestly don't know if all the Weyrs know about it or not,” he admitted. Maybe someone had found it out by mistake like it sounded like the south did. “Shards, that is azy.”crazy
“Yeah. Which is why I came here to find out more information. I did not realise it was common knowledge. This changed everything,” Lana said quietly. “It was common from what this said in the last pass before they thought they stopped Thread.”
K'rei read through the hide, seeing what she meant. “Hmm, I wonder if that is why it was lost to the south. It stopped being used and no one thought to continue to pass it on just in case.””
“We expanded from Southern and if there was no need the knowledge was lost unlike you guys up here. Shards… What else do we not know.” Lana felt embarrassed now as she thought about it all. They were unprepared and she needed to let A’ren know about it all. Her eyes glazed over as she converged with Kalaith who was passing information to Zarminath.
That seemed odd but he could understand too. “We rarely ever use it here,” he admitted. Not that he hadn't thought about it a few times. Especially after losing Talyn and his son. “It's amazing your rider figured it out.”
“She’s dragonless now.” Lana said quietly. “She’s a dolphineer but still lives at the Weyr. She is amazing though. We just did not appreciate her until it was too late.” Lana said sadly as she came back to the conversation. Nerlyn had figured it out when she had been far too young to comprehend and the Weyrleaders had failed her.
K'rei's eyes widened in surprise. And she was still living? Most couldn't survive that kind of loss. “Shards,” he whispered. “I'm sorry. Dolphineer huh? Always figured that's what I would be. I am glad she found another trade she enjoys.”
The Weyrwoman smiled a little at the expression on the man’s face. “Like I said she is amazing. Timing consistently for ten turns I just…” Lana looked away ashamed of herself where the older woman was concerned. “She put her time and energy into her their son and the new child she is carrying. I bet K’ron would love your input on Dolphineering.”
That was amazing. He would be curious to meet her sometime. Maybe. One never knew. “10 Turns? And now she has a son and one on the way?” it sounded like her life at least didn't fall completely apart. “Most definitely. I miss being with the dolphins but Mantith does help there.”
“Yes ten turns. So how do you do it?” She wondered. Nerlyn had been a little vague about it all but she needed to know if this was something that had been done in the North then the south needed to know it.
K'reI couldn't imagine doing it that long. It took a toll on the body. He considered Lana’s question. “It's a lot like regular betweening,” he started. “But you have to have a very clear picture of usually how the stars were aligned or something in the past that was only that way at a certain time.”
“She used threadfull.” Lana said as the bronze riders walked in looking relaxed and almost like they might be enjoying the company. They would have heard her “Hello you two.” Lana greeted them.
The blue rider considered that. “That would work as well,” he agreed.
K'ron looked up. “Hello,” he smiled. He was finally relaxing a bit now that they were here.
“So our blue rider friend here has just revealed that the north knows all about timing.” She admitted, sighing leaning back into the chair. “And he is a former dolphineer.” She added brighter than the admittance.
“He did?” K'ron asked in surprise. Well that he hadn't expected. His eyes brightened. “Really? you were a dolphineer?”
K'rei nodded. “I was.”
“It’s seems the south does not have this knowledge but the north does. I need to speak to the Weyrleaders. Both mine and yours.” Lana stood up to head to find him when V’ros blocked the way . “I will go to his office now.” Lana said knowing it would not be far. V’ros glanced to K’ron not knowing whether to let her go alone or not.
K'ron didn't like this. He knew Lana was independent but she shouldn't be alone. He shook his head, letting V'ros know silently that at least one of them should stay with her.
“I can come with you, Weyrwoman.” He offered a polite smile to the queen rider. Lana looked between the fair before she rolled her eyes.
“Fine,” She said, watching the older man step aside to let her lead the way.
K'ron smiled in relief. At least he knew she would be safe with V'ros.
