S'cir paced angrily in his office, not able to face T'han yet without saying something he shouldn't. How could this have happened? He had thought his riders were better than that. And to attack another bronze rider? What had the young man been thinking? Shards, he wished the Weyrwoman was still there.
Lana strode in without knocking looking angry and worried all at the same time. The man was stood there looking wild but at least he no longer held a dagger as it was on the desk. Lana sat down on the sofa and just waited for the Weyrleader to stop pacing. It was strange to see it from this side.
S'cir hadn't noticed Lana right away but as soon as he did he stopped his pacing for the moment being. “Is your rider okay, Weyrwoman?” he asked, shooting T'han an angry look.
“I do not know. I have sent him back to River Cove. I hope I will not regret being here alone.” Lana said, crossing her legs looking at the two men as she could feel Kalaith on the heights pacing herself. She was at strange Weyr alone with her rider covered in another riders blood.
The Weyrleader nodded. “You are safe,” he promised, glaring at his young bronze rider. “Right T'han?” He growled. “There will be no more senseless duels and shed blood. Especially of fellow riders.” How had his riders gotten so out of control?
Laliy rushed up the steps with wine in hand after she had made sure the two bronze riders had gotten off safely. She quietly slipped in, setting the tray on the desk.
“Because my riders are about to get back to River Cove without me. My mate is going to hit the roof. Do you know who my mate it T’han?”
“No Weyrwoman.” The man answered.
“The Weyrleader of River Cove. And I love him a lot and he loves me a lot which is why he is my mate. He is going to be pretty angry that I have made his riders return without me and he will want to come here. But I have gotten Kalaith to ban his dragon from coming here and I am now trying to remind him of diplomacy.”
S'cir blew out a frustrated breath. He knew A'ren. Had met the man before and knew he was a fair man. But in these circumstances he didn't think keeping a fair mind would be the first thing A'ren was thinking about. “You are fortunate she is not allowing her mate to come. You would get worse then I could ever do.”
Laliy blinked. Gold dragons could even ground the Weyrleader's dragon? Shards she had a lot to learn.
“I am also banning F’cone.” She said sharing a look with S’cir as that would be a bad situation too. “I do not understand what happened T’han. What made you think that was appropriate?”
“He tipped porridge over me..”
“By accident.” Lana said firmly.
“By accident and I just saw red as he was from the south where everything is sharding perfect.” The young bronze rider said quietly.
S'cir inclined his head. At least he wouldn't have to worry about F'cone. Either of those men would have been trouble right now. “Perfect?” He asked his rider. “What do you mean?”
Koda chirped angrily at T'han. Before K'ron had completely lost his senses he had told his little brown to stay with Lana.
“They’ve got order and leadership. We have you and the child.” T’han motioned to Laliy. “No chance of any changes for turns.”
“You talk to a queen rider of any age and standing with respect or you do not speak at all.” Lana said quickly as Koda appeared and Lana indicated her shoulder. At least K’ron’s fire lizard was still there and as angry as ever which meant the older man was alive.
Laliy flushed in embarrassment. She had secretly known part of this was her fault and she didn't know how to fix this. She was no good as a gold rider for this Weyr.
S'cir narrowed his eyes. “You rider are out of line. The dragons know what they are doing. And that doesn't give you a reason to attack another rider. What if you had killed him?” He growled. “What of his dragon?”
Koda fluttered his wings before gently landing on Lana’s shoulder. The little brown was still chirping with whirling red eyes.
The bronze rider said nothing and just rolled his eyes. He had not thought ahead enough and had just reacted. “He did not think. He just saw red and K’ron was just unfortunate enough to be there.” Lana commented, grabbing up a glass of wine. She did not care that she had not had klah or even breakfast. This was a mess.
The Weyrleader could see that Lana was very much right. T'han hadn't thought at all. It was a miracle he hadn't killed K'ron.
“Why would you do that?” Laliy asked in pure disbelief. “He is a nice rider. He wouldn't hurt anyone.” Or at least after talking to him she didn't think he would.
T’han said nothing. “Answer her.” Lana promoted. The man looked at the woman and groaned.
“I did it because I could. I saw him as someone who has something and I thought why him? We fight thread more.” The bronze rider said with a shrug. “I saw red and just did it.”
Laliy blinked in disbelief. How could anyone think that?
“Seriously rider?” S'cir growled. “It's not their fault Thread falls less in the south. You know there are going to be repercussions for this. Starting with being grounded.”
Koda cheeped and nudged Lana's cheek, still staring at T'han.
“We supply the north with riders and help where we can.” Lana said, standing finally tugging her shirt down a little as she looked at the Weyrleader. “The grubs helped you guys too, which came from the south.” She reminded him shaking her head at the resentment he had. “Do you feel like that Weyrwoman? Weyrleader?”
Laliy quickly shook her head. “I don't,” she answered quickly. She had no reason to be angry with the south.
“The grubs were helpful and you do supply riders when you can,” S'cir answered. “I hold no ill will toward the south. I will agree though that we have a lot to work on here,” he slowly agreed.
“Good because after our conversation last night S’cir I thought we were friends and had a understanding.” She sighed, shaking her head at the angry bronze rider. “How can River Cove help?” Lana asked lowly as she looked at the dry blood on her hands. She gently caressed the fire lizard, annoyed that K’ron would have order him to stay with her.
S'cir nodded. “We are,” he assured her. “Not much you can do to help,” he answered. “Until Laliy and Micayith are old enough we can't do much. Just work to get things back under control.”
Koda cheeped softly at Lana. He was settling down a bit.
Laliy bit her lip. “What if I wasn't here?” She asked. “Would that allow you a chance to get an adult gold rider here?”
“Yes but…” Lana glanced at the Weyrleader. “T’han go to your Weyr until Kalaith or another gold lets you and your dragon out to feed.” The bronze rider glanced at the Weyrleader but knew he was getting better deal there and then with just listening to Lana.
“Yes Weyrwoman.” The man said quickly running out of the office. He was not wanting to be an insect on the wall for that conversation when his bronze was already miserable enough.
S'cir looked at the gold weyrling in surprise. “If you weren't here? What are you thinking?” Did she really want to leave? Had he messed up that badly?
Laliy hesitated as T'han left. “I don't know but I know I am no use here. I'm holding the Weyr back because of my age. You need someone who can lead this Weyr, not me.”
“You are young,” S'cir pointed out. “You will learn.”
Lana sat down with her wine and watched the pair go and forth on the subject. This was not her argument as she could see both sides of the argument. Lana decided the best thing she could do was pour the Weyrleader a glass of wine and trying and sort out Kalaith and establishing who was coming from River Cove.
“That is the point. I'm young and I can’t help get the Weyr in order til I'm older. Surely something like this has happened in the past.”
S'cir groaned. He didn't like this at all. “yes it has but are you sure you really want to leave? I don't…
“Stop,” Laliy said. “I want what is best for High Reaches, for the riders here.” She looked over at Lana. “surely i can do something.”
Lana glanced up at S’cir and felt for the man rising to put the glass in his hands. “Let the girl go. She can come to River Cove if she wishes and you can request junior queens from other Weyrs and they can slog it out for Weyrwoman.” Lana soothed quietly to the man. They both knew it was for the best despite how the bronze rider didn’t like it. “She is offering. No one is forcing her. You did a good job of protecting.”
S'cir humbly accepted the glass of wine. The Weyrleader didn't like it but Lana was right and Laliy had the correct attitude as much as he hated to admit it. “feels like i failed,” he said quietly before looking over at Laliy. “Weyrwoman Lana has offered for you to join her at River Cove,” he said gently. “but you are always welcome here and I would never make you leave if you choose to stay.”
Laliy quietly listened. When she heard Lana mention about being able to request older riders and S’cir finally giving in she smiled. “Thank you, Weyrleader. I would like to go with the Weyrwoman.”
“You have not failed S'cir.” Lana said simply. “No one expected this and Laily has handled this to the best of her abilities.” She reminded him gently. It was not something that had been expected but there they were. The young girl had managed to get this far but she needed training and the Weyr needed adults.
He slowly nodded, knowing Lana was right but it didn't make it any easier. “You're right. Laliy, you have chosen very well and made a good choice. You and Micayith will be missed dearly though, but I understand.”
Laliy broke all protocol and walked over to hug the Weyrleader. “Thank you. You have helped a lot.”
Lana smiled sadly. “Go and instruct the Weyrlingmasters to gather your weyrling items and files.” Lana said gently. “We aren’t leaving for a little bit but it will take them time.”
}: I will ask their dragons too :{ Kalaith assured before she bellowed at the arrival of familiar dragons from River Cove.
“My riders have arrived it seems.” Lana said as if there was any mistake over that.
S'cir had been shocked by the hug but at the same time grateful. he returned her gentle hug before the girl pulled away and bounded out of the office to collect her belongings.
“I am going to miss her,” he said softly. “she will be a great queen rider when she gets older.”
“You did. Great job. But you cannot do it by yourself. And you certainly cannot hold the Weyr together by yourself.” Lana said cross at him for holding out so long until it became a pressure pot. “Drink your wine. We have to go face your Weyr and hope we have been sent sensible Riders. What are you going to do with T’han?” Lana wondered gulping back her wine.
She was right and S'cir knew it. it was just hard to swallow sometimes but at least he knew Laliy would get trained right and maybe he could get a couple more golds here to get High Reaches back on its feet. he took a gulp of his wine. “I'm not sure yet. He's grounded for a while and definitely extra duties.” This was something he didn't think he would ever face.
“You have been a good Weyrleader. If you were my Weyrleader I’d be happy.” Lana told him softly. She was not quite flirting but she was truthful as she had known him turns.
“Thank you, Lana,” he said. “And please give my deepest apologies to your rider. That never should have happened and I plan to make sure it never does again.”
Lana sighed, Lana had no idea what she was going to face when she got home. A’ren was going to be angry, Nerlyn distraught and who knows what else if K’ron died. “He is alive for now.” Lana assured turning as a knock sounded before Lana or S’cir walked out the door.
S'cir felt awful. He still couldn't believe something like that had happened. He raised a brow at the knock. “Enter,” he said.
Lana sat back on the sofa to see who it was before she was either dismissed or asked to stay. In walked I’han, K’vin and Neilla bringing up the read looking tiny compared to her 2 companions. “K’vin? I’han? Neilla?” Lana said the relief evident that if Neilla was there K’ron was safe and alive.
“Weyrwoman… The … Our Weyrleader sent us here to bring you back to River Cove.” I’han said quietly trying to be firm.
K'vin was quiet as he walked in with his companions. He did make an opposing figure despite the fact when you got to know him he was a big softy. Especially with his mate.
Well that would explain why he didn't really recognize these riders. “I would say welcome to High Reaches, but I'm thinking you wouldn't accept that after what happened to your fellow rider,” S'cir said.
“Afraid not Weyrleader.” I’han said politely but he did not take his gaze off Lana.
“Then you guys need to wait a little bit as I have not finished what I came here to complete.” Lana said.
“The Weyrleader said you were going to say that which is why he sent three of us to hurry you along as he wants the Wingleader of Amethyst Wing back at River Cove by Sunset tomorrow.” Neilla said politely as she offered a sad smile to the Weyrleader. He looked worn out but relieved over something that she had no idea of what it could be.
S'cir nodded in understanding. “How is the Wingleader?” He asked softly. Koda cheeped from Lana’s shoulder, clearly wanting to know the same.
K'vin sighed softly. “Holding his own. He pretty much passed out at his dragon’s feet,” he answered in his quiet way. “His mate was beside herself when we left.”
The Weyrleader groaned. That was what he was afraid of. At least the young man was alive. His eyes showed how truly sorry he was for everything that had happened.
Lana frowned at the phrasing from Neilla and it showed in her tone. “The Wingleader of Amethyst is more than capable of knowing when to return but she will.” She knew that A’ren couldn’t order her back as Weyrwoman or mate but he sharding could as Wingleader. ”Koda go to Nerlyn.” The woman instructed the fire lizard hoping he would go to the Dolphineer.
Koda hesitated as K'ron had told him to stay with Lana. At the mention of Nerlyn though he perked up. He cheeped once and blinked between.
K'vin glanced at Neilla. He had never heard her talk like that.
S'cir sighed. He could understand their anger. “I understand if you need to leave Weyrwoman.”
Neilla glanced at K’vin and poked her tongue out at him a little. She was being serious because A’ren had specifically told her that. “I have not finished my task of putting your records room back in order and our young friend needs a little time to pack up and get herself in order for herself and weyrling. You have letters to send too Weyrleader.” She reminded him gently
K'vin rolled his eyes and barely managed to keep a straight face.
“you are very right,” S'cir agreed. He did need to get some letters wrote and Laliy needed to get packed up. That still hurt, letting her go.
“Come on then riders. And I hope you brought a spare jacket.” Lana commented remembering she was not going to be able to leave without another jacket as she had given hers to K’ron to cover his wound.
K'vin nodded. “Right here, Weyrwoman,” he answered. “But may I ask without sounding rude who is the young friend we are waiting on?”
S'cir smiled a bit. He would let Lana answer that one, but it was nice to see riders that respected their Weyrwoman. He just hoped he could help to bring High Reaches back to that now that he could open the Weyr up to other queens.
“Thank you K’vin.” Lana waited for the door to close and they had gone up a flight of stairs with Lana working her way into the jacket to warm up. “A weyrling gold pair.” Lana answered. “She’s coming south to open the Weyr up to adult pairs so something like this doesn’t happen again. Neilla, K’vin can you go and pack up the spaces that V’ros and K’ron were using and I’han…”
“I am staying with you Weyrwoman.” I’han said firmly.
K'vin looked over at his Weyrwoman. “A weyrling gold? That is very unexpected.” Although it would explain a lot as to why this whole mess had happened. The bronze rider nodded. “Of course Weyrwoman.” It was probably the most he had spoken in a while accept to his mate.
Lana looked at the pair as they left and turned to I’han and let out a few deep breaths before she composed herself. I’han said nothing other than kept watch as she took a moment to handle everything that had happened in the last candlemark or so.
