Nikolai sat by K’ron and watched him carefully even after he had taken his pulse rate and knew he was on the mend. It did not make him feel any better that the man was there but at least if he woke up a bit better he could go rest in his own weyr hopefully. Nikolai looked up at the figure in the doorway half expecting it to be Nerlyn despite sending her to bed but he smiled sadly when he saw it was the Weyrleader. “Good evening Weyrleader.” The journeyman greeted.
K'ron still mumbled off and on as he fought the nightmares from that day. He barely reacted to the new voices though.
A'ren nodded as he stepped over to the bed. “Hey Nikolai. How is he?” He asked softly, looking at the bronze rider who still looked bad in his opinion.
The Journeyman nodded at the greeting. He was no one near as informal with the Weyrleader after all this time but he respected the older man. Nikolai moved and indicated the man could have the chair. “He had certainly been better but his fever is down and he isn’t thrashing around as much.” Nikolai said, checking his temperature again.
The Weyrleader cringed. At least his fever was down, but one wouldn't guess it by looking at him. “That's good to hear. Poor man.” A'ren still couldn't believe that had happened. Out of all the bronze riders A'ren knew K'ron had to be the most level headed. “Will he be okay?”
“Completely Weyrleader. Once he is all healed up I can not see any reason why he would not be okay again. The stab wound thankfully missed anything important. Just need to make sure Nerlyn does not kill him for scaring her.” Nikolai said with a bit of a smile. He had no doubt Nerlyn and K’ron were going to have a very heated conversation once he was well enough and not quite as delirious.
“Ooh I hadn't considered that. That's a conversation I definitely wouldn't want to be a part of.” He nodded a bit. “I am glad he is okay though. Well as okay as one can be with a knife wound.” He studied K'ron who still slept a bit fitfully.
“Me either but I feel I might be witness to it.” It was one of the reasons he tried to get the man out of there. “Nerlyn thankfully should be sleeping and not sat here worrying. Master Jameas was going to visit her later on and check on her.” The dolphin master had been worried about the rider and his new journeywoman.
A'ren nodded. “I fear you may be. Perhaps he will be up and about sooner then you realize and that won't happen.” of course he had gotten mad at Lana so he could understand.
“Sit down Weyrleader before you fall down.” Nikolai prompted quietly. “I would like that to happen.” The Journeyman did not like seeing any of the riders in their long term, especially when they recovered better in their own beds.
A'ren didn't argue and slid into Nikolai’s vacated seat. He was exhausted from no sleep while Lana was gone and now this. “Is there anything else we can do for him?” he asked quietly, watching his rider toss and turn a bit.
“Fever has to burn out and he is doing better than he was this morning.” Nikolai said gently. “See if you can talk to him.” He suggested with a shrug. From a healer point of view they had done what they could for now as he had been stitched up, medicines provided but he had to work though the chill now.
That sounded like a good thing. he knew the healers knew what they were doing and he trusted Nikolai completely. The man had got him through some rough patches. “Hey K'ron. Thank you for bringing Lana home safely.”
“I’ll get some coolvine tea to see if he will drink it when he wakes up. Oh hello Nerlyn…” Nikoai murmured as Nerlyn walked into the area and looked confused at the Weyrleader sat there.
“Okay,” A'ren said. He figured Nikolai knew best. He turned as he heard Nikolai greet Nerlyn. “Hi Nerlyn,” he said.
Nerlyn was not sure why the man was there but she was glad someone was. “Weyrleader.” The woman commented as she knelt by K’ron and stroked his face gently hope to settle back down.
A'ren moved out of her way to let her close to her mate. K'ron moved slightly at Nerlyn’s soft touch and settled a bit. A'ren smiled. “I'm glad he has you to watch over him.”
“Well you have been doing it too.” She pointed out wishing he would wake up so she could reassure him that things were okay. He was safe and if that Rider ever came within a mile of River Cove she would personally drown him.
The Weyrleader nodded. True enough. He wanted to make sure his riders were safe. “How are you holding up?”
“Worried. I knew this would happen.” Nerlyn whispered softly. “This was my worry and it came true.” She did not look at the man as she was so frustrated by it all when she had been right. She had not wanted to be right but here they were.
A'ren completely understood. He didn't know what would happen but he had had a bad feeling about this whole trip. Now he was proved right. “He's strong. You know he'll never leave you and Raen.”
“He better not.” Nerlyn said softly, caressing the bronze riders cheek softly. She loved this man fiercely even at the worst moments he was her guiding light and she could not think of Pern without him. “I do not think I know what to do without him A’ren.”
K'ron sighed softly under Nerlyn’s light touch. He was still warm and sweaty but better.
A'ren gave her a gentle smile. “I understand,” he said gently. “He'll be okay.”
“If not, you better take me to High Reaches.” The woman commented as she bent and kissed his forehead wishing he didn’t feel so hot under her lips. “You are okay baby. You are safe.” She whispered thinking how similar it was to her own mantra.
“I will gladly take you,” A'ren assured her. He would be right there with her. All he could think was K'ron better not die. Although the young man looked bad.
“Let’s not kill anyone right now, the pair of you. Everyone is good.” Nikolai commented, stepping back in. He glanced as A’ren surprised that the Weyrleader was even agreeing when they both knew that Nerlyn would fully follow through on the threat and spend the rest of her life in the mines or worse for it.
Yes A'ren shouldn't have agreed but he felt the same. And he wouldn't really let Nerlyn do it. “You are right,” he agreed with Nikolai. “You just stay close to him, Nerlyn. I'm sure hearing you will bring him around.”
Nikolai rolled his eyes at the man and crouched by the cot and looked at the man. “His heart rate is calm Ner. And his temp is coming down. Let’s try and wake him up and get him to drink some coolvine tea as it’ll help more.” Nikolai said kindly, very conscious of her pregnancy.
A'ren pushed to his feet. “I'll leave you guys to it. I just wanted to stop by and see how everyone was.” He gently squeezed Nerlyn’s shoulder as he passed.
Nerlyn looked up at the man and leaned out grabbing his hand before he could sneak off. “Do not be mad at Lana.” She whispered quietly to him having heard about the yelling.
He turned as Nerlyn caught his hand. He blew out a soft breath. “Alright,” he agreed. “We're okay now.” They had sorted things out.
“It is not her fault.” She prompted gently. She was not one to interfere in relationships but when it came to the Weyrleaders she was going to speak up. She did not want the Weyr to go back to how it had been.
A'ren nodded. “I know,” he agreed. He had been more worried than angry which had turned into yelling. “Thank you for helping me see straight,” he answered.
Nerlyn let his hand go and watched him go ignoring Nikolai for a moment before she nodded at the journeyman. She did not want this to effect her home, no matter what was going on with her the Weyr had to continue.
