FSH: Spouses Vs Mate

Posted on Mon Dec 22nd, 2025 @ 7:41pm by Gold Rider Lana & Bronze Rider A'ren

Mission: 3531 AL
Timeline: M3 D25

A'ren yawned a bit as he carried a mug over to where Lana was sitting. Both had agreed to stay around And see how everyone was at Far Site. “Here you go, love,” he smiled, setting the mug down before sitting down himself. “quite a night.”

Lana yawned as A’ren sat down next to her and smiled at his reassuring presence. “Thank you Weyrleader.” She breathed, picking up the mug, warming her hands with it. “Yes, not a night I will forget in a long time.” She had not been a midwife for a long time but it had felt as natural as being Weyrwoman.

A'ren sipped on his own klah. They at least knew the baby was safe and healthy. They still didn't know about Rena though. “Me neither. I am glad we were here though. That little girl is adorable. do you think Lady Rena will he okay?”

Lana looked at the man and sighed as she pulled his flight jacket around her a little more. “I do not know in all honesty.” She admitted. “Preeclampsia is dangerous. We have lost several riders over the turns to it hitting them
before or after birth.” Lana admitted

He looked at his mate in surprise. “Really?” He asked. A'ren didn't know much about the healer end of things but if Lana said it was bad then he believed her. “I don't think this family could handle another hit like that.”

“Really. It’s complicated but the female body is complicated.” Lana teased a little. “Not in the slightest. She’s unconscious but comfortable.” Lana sighed softly to herself and rubbed her eyes wishing she brought her glasses.

A'ren shook his head. He wasn't touching that subject. “So she could end up being just fine?” He asked, trying to follow Lana's train of thought. He sipped in his klah, feeling exhausted. The poor family.

“I really do not know A’ren. She has had a couple of fits but she could wake up and be fine.” She really did not know as things like that were unknown. “We should head back to the Weyr soon. It’s nearly dawn which means it’s after dawn there.” She said having already told Zalyith where they were.

He nodded a bit. Okay he guessed that made sense. He didn't really know. “You're probably right. There isn't much more we can do here for them.”

“They have the master healer here so sunshine they have the best people.” Lana breathed closing her eyes for just a moment as she tried to center herself before she sat up properly.

“You are very right,” A'ren agreed. They really couldn't do anything that the Master Healer couldn't do better and more efficiently.

“Not always but right now I am,” Lana said slowly standing to look at the man. She held out her free hand that did not have a mug to him to tug him to his feet as Lord Oben came in and saw the pair.

He chuckled tiredly as Lana pulled him to his feet. “You are more often than not right,” he teased her. He yawned a bit, not realizing Oben had walked in.

Oben smiled at the pair. He had seen many Weyrleaders over his turns as Lord holder but he had never seen a pair quite so insync or devoted to the other. “I feel I need to thank you both again.” The man stated revealing he was there watching.

A'ren quickly looked over, inclining his head to the Lord Holder. That definitely showed how tired he was that he hadn't noticed Oben there. “We are just glad we were here.”

“Can I get you some rooms or a room to rest before you head back to your Weyr.” They might look devoted but he did not want to quite assume it all.

A'ren glanced at Lana. “What do you think, love? Catch a little sleep before we head back? No sense in over doing it.” It was hard to picture things clearly for between when you were tired.

“I think that would be perfect Lord Oben. I do not think Kalaith would appreciate flying straight as I can not picture clearly.” Lana said, smiling a little as she clutched A’ren’s flight jacket . “The Weyrleader can decide if he naps alone though.”

A'ren was glad Lana felt the same as he did. He wouldn't be able to picture clearly either. He laughed tiredly. “Now why would I want to do that when I can snuggle with you?”

“Now that sounds like a husband speaking.” The Lord holder laughed a little as he indicated to his steward who was following him. Lana looked at A’ren but said nothing. She was not commenting on that or the differences in the Weyr vs Hold.

The Weyrleader just grinned. There was no sense in trying to explain the differences. Especially not with everything that was going on. “Thank you for the use of the room.”

“Follow Rollo and he’ll get you somewhere you can rest.” Oben commented with a smile as he watched the pair follow the Steward. Lana said nothing until the door was closed and locked.

“Husband hmm?” Lana teased chucking his heavy jacket in his direction.

A'ren quietly walked beside Lana as they followed Rollo to their room. Once inside he barely turned with enough time to catch his jacket. “Did you want to explain the difference?” He grinned. “Besides it wouldn't be that bad to be my wife now would it?”

“Oh no I was not going to explain that. He is liberal but he was not 100% sure of how close we are.” She said, smiling at him as she caressed his cheek. “I’d make you grey within a turn as your wife.” Lana said grinning as she turned away from him to the fire holding her hand out to him.

That was true enough. A'ren took her hand as she stepped over to the fire. “Hmm you are trying to do that anyhow,” he pointed out with a chuckle. “And yes I guess you're right. He shouldn't have any doubts now.”

Lana rolled her eyes at the man and tugged him closer to the fire and enjoyed the moment. “Well in that case dear husband stuck with me either way.” She teased just a little. She loved him despite the fractious relationship they had at the moment thanks to the trip north.

He laughed softly as she tugged him over by the fire. The warmth was nice as was being with Lana. “I wouldn't want to be stuck anywhere else,” he assured her. They had their ups and downs but Lana was his life.

“I know. I hope you know I feel exactly the same. It’s me and you for however many turns we have together.” Lana promised softly weaving her fingers through his. She loved the way he surrounded her and made her feel safe even at the worst points of Dragon Hold she had never had a moment of fear when he was beside her.

A'ren nodded. “I know that,” he assured her, kissing her hair. “I know we’ve had our ups and downs but I wouldn't want to be anyone else.” He would stand beside her for as long as she let him.

Lana looked up at him after a few long moments of silence and contemplation of how good her life was compared to a turn ago. “Bed husband.” She said finally when a yawn slipped out. A few candlemarks of sleep and they would be able to tackle the Weyr again.

A'ren laughed a bit but then yawned. “Bed yes,” he agreed. he kept his fingers twined with hers as he led the way to the bed.
