Bensen woke with a start, nearly rolling off the couch he didn't remember laying down on. He looked around in alarm, not sure where he was. Last he remembered was talking to Rena and her asking him to leave. He kind of remembered talking with his family but then nothing.
“Where?” He mumbled, rubbing at his face. “Ren? Bre?”
Enabon looked up from his book and smirked at his younger brother nearly rolling off the couch. He had not expected the man to sleep 12 candlemarks but he obviously needed it. “Mother gave you fellis wine and you slept 12 candlemarks. Everyone is fine, Rena is where you left her with the baby and has had several visitors and Brenna is practically climbing on he Hold waiting for you to wake up so you can go visit together.” Enabon said firmly trying to sound kind but he was also trying to let the man know what he needed to.
Bensen blinked at his brother's voice, trying to let the pieces fall into place. Rena was still in the infirmary with their daughter. Oh Shards they had a daughter. Bensen pushed himself up slowly. “Mother laced my wine with fellis?” He asked surprised. That would explain why he felt a bit foggy. “Wait, 12….oh shards,” he groaned. He had really slept that long?
“Well if it was not mother it would have been me. Mother at least would get the dose right. You needed sleep. You were mumbling about Rena sending you away and being unkind. She simply sent you away to get some sleep as you were awake so long worrying.” Enabon commented on getting up, grabbing a mug that he was keeping warm by the large fire. “Klah to clear your mind. Go bath and shave if you feel you need that, get clean clothes on and you’ll be okay.”
Bensen groaned a bit as he scrubbed at his face. He couldn't believe his family had done that. Well he could but had he really been that out of it? “Of course I was worrying,” he said, accepting the mug of klah. “But yes she was probably right. I had just been so afraid if I closed my eyes then she would disappear.”
Enabon sat down next to him with his own mug and signed. “Of course you had every right to worry brother but all is fine. Neither have disappeared.” They had never had an easy relationship to different in age and temperament but the eldest brother had been trying.
Bensen sipped on his klah, letting the heat warm him through. “I know. I get that now but I couldn't shake that feeling.” He had never felt such fear before as when he thought he was losing Rena.
“Because you needed sleep.” The older man commented with a smile. He hated seeing any one in his family that worked up but Bensen was the only one that was pushing for a future right then and there.
“Yeah I get that now,” he conceded. Rena had been right but at the time it hadn't felt like it. “Did I hear you say Bre hasn't met her sister yet?”
“She refused to go without you.” Enabon said, rolling his eyes a little. “Really have them all wrapped around your finger.” The man said knowing it might have sounded mean but his tone was nothing but amused.
Bensen flushed a bit. “I never expected a family like this,” he admitted. Now it made complete sense why Oseben was always so happy. “Where is Bre now?”
“Hopefully at breakfast or first lessons.” Enabon said not commenting on the first part. He was jealous but it was not through any fault of his youngest brothers or the harper that they both have fallen for. “but you really need to bathe and change. Not exactly fresh right now.” The man teased a little knowing it would rile the man up into doing something.
Bensen growled at his brother even if he was right. “Fine,” he grumbled. “I'll get a bath.” He was not going to admit to Enabon that he felt filthy and definitely could go for a bath and fresh clothes.
“Half a candlemark won’t make a difference.” The man assured with a smile as he rose from the couch of the family and patted the man on his shoulder leaving him to his own devices to get himself together. “Just let me know when I can eventually visit my new niece and your wife.”
“Yeah you're probably right,” he reluctantly agreed. He did need to clean up and then he needed to find Brenna. The little girl deserved to see her mother and baby sister. “I will,” Bensen promised.
Enabon left the man on his own as returned to his book and what he had been reading before jis brother had woken but he did send his queen fire lizard to check on the girl and track her down.
Bensen slowly pushed to his feet with a stretch. He wanted to get down to find Brenna as soon as he could and then see how Rena and the baby were doing. .
Brenna was excited to see him when he arrived to collect her from her lesson. She let out a happy screech as she realised she was going to get to see her mummy for the first time in nearly a sevenday after she became unwell. “Finally.”
Bensen definitely felt better after the bath and clean clothes. And seeing Brenna's smiling face only added to it. “Hey sweetheart,” he smiled, swinging her into his arms. “Guessing you're ready to see mama?”
“I miss her. Time with grandmother is okay but I want mama.” Brenna said wrapping her arms around him tightly as she agreed with him. She was desperate to see her mother and the baby too but mostly her mother. She wanted to know that she was okay.
“I understand,” he said softly, snuggling her close. “Then let's go.” He kept Brenna in his arms as he walked back to where Rena and the baby were. He knocked before stepping inside. “Knock knock,” he smiled.
“Come in.” A soft voice called but it was not Rena. A female healer opened the door with a small smile. “They are both asleep but I am sure a few minutes and I am sure they will wake up.”
Bensen was surprised by a different voice but smiled at the Healer. “Thank you,” he said, sitting Brenna down on her feet so she could head for the bed if she wanted. He had a feeling the Healer was right.
Brenna wasted no time in moving to where her mother was sound asleep and touched her cheek softly. She looked pale but no other signs of injury or anything could be seen from the 3 year old. “Mama…” she whispered before anyone could stop her. Rena blinked her eyes several times before she took in the tiny face right by her and grinned turning awkwardly to bring her up onto the cot and hug her to her.
Bensen opened his mouth to stop her but Brenna was quicker and was already beside Rena before he could say two words. he sighed softly as he joined his little family, letting Brenna get some much needed and missed hugs from her mother.
“Oh I have missed you little girl.” Rena whispered as she snuggled the girl into her chest as she glanced to Bensen and held out her hand to him as she whispered thank you.
Bensen pulled a chair up next to the bed before taking Rena'a hand. He nodded, a smile touching his lips. It was the best sight he had seen since he couldn't remember when.
Rena squeezed his hand as she kept the girl close to her to her burying her face in her sweet smelling hair. She breathed in everything filling her lungs with the familiarness of the little girl as Cadence crooned from her position across the baby’s crib.
Bensen smiled. “Sorry it's taken so long to get back, sweetheart,” he said softly, glad to feel the strength in her hand again. He leaned up and kissed her forehead. He couldn't believe they had gotten through this in one piece.
“You were knackered.” She pointed out squeezing his hand again. “You needed rest after being that alert.”
“He was snoring.” Brenna said from amongst her mothers hair revealing she had come and seen him when he had been asleep.
Bensen stared at his daughter in surprise. “You came to see me?” He asked, having not realized she was there. He honestly didn't remember much after drinking the wine. He shook his head a bit as he smiled at Rena. “Yeah mom drugged my wine with some fellis,” he admitted.
“As I knew she would.” Rena laughed as Brenna nodded and pulled her face out.
“You were snoring loudly. Grandpa told me you needed sleep.” She laughed leaning over to hug Bensen.
Bensen groaned. “Apparently I was the only wherryhead who didn't realize that I needed sleep,” he said, returning Brenna’s hug. “Well I have slept now so being with my family is my top priority.”
Brenna let the man go. “Can I meet my sister now?” She requested brightly. She was nervous but desperate to see the life she had seen her mum grow.
Bensen smiled. “I think that can be arranged, right Ren?” He asked, wanting to make sure she was okay with him waking the baby up long enough for Brenna to meet her.
“Of course.” Rena said, indicating the crib next to her bed. “Her daddy is going to have to get her though cause I’m holding my bigger baby.”
He chuckled a bit as he got to his feet. Daddy? Would he ever get used to that word? Shards he missed his brother. This should have been Oseben’s happy day. He couldn't dwell on that thought though as he reached in to gently lift the baby into his arms. “Hey sweet girl, there's someone here that wants to meet you,” he whispered, moving over to be close to Brenna.
Brenna squealed as the baby was place on her lap. She suddenly went silent and looked at the baby before bursting into tears. “She is so small.” She whispered.
Bensen blinked. Okay he hadn't expected that reaction. “She is tiny but perfectly healthy,” he smiled, glancing up at Rena. This fatherhood thing was new to him.
“She is fine, Bre. You were that small once.” Rena assured smiling at her husband seeing the confusion on his face. “She’ll grow bigger by the day just like you.” She stroked the baby’s cheek and then Brenna’s. ”Both my girls.”
Oh this was going to take some getting used to. Sure he has been around Brenna when she was this little but Oseben had been the one watching over her. “You'll miss these days of her being tiny.”
The girl hiccuped a few times before she calmed down. “I want her to be big so we can play with the runners together.” She stated as Rena rolled her be eyes.
“Maybe she’ll be a harper.” The woman teased a little.
Bensen laughed a bit. He did hope at least one of the girls picked up the Harper craft. He highly doubted it would be Brenna though. “If she is then she can play music for the runners.”
“Certainly.” The woman said, looking at Bensen laughing herself. “So we are all going to be okay. I will be getting out in a few days. and the. We can all settle down into something new and be a bigger family.”
“I like the sound of that,” Bensen said. He wanted his family back with him, not stuck in the infirmary. Not that he wouldn't stay in the infirmary with her as much as he could.
“I miss my bed.” Rena said quietly as she quietly lifted the baby to her chest as Brenna cuddled in a little more. “And I miss you all too.” She added as she looked at Bensen pointedly.
He flashed his wife a smile, feeling much better now that he had some sleep. “And we miss you too,” he said gently. “Hopefully very soon.”
“A few days. I need to heal up a little more before they release me to your care.” She teased a little knowing she would be in good hands with Brenna and Bensen looking after her.
Bensen nodded. That was probably smart but that didn't mean he liked it. He wanted her home. “That will be nice. Until then we'll just spend time here with you.”
“Within reason and health.” The harper said pointedly looking at Bensen again knowing he needed to be healthy to look after them all. “Ohhh and the runners' health and wellbeing too.” She added just to tease him knowing they all obsessed over it.
He pulled a face but nodded. “Of course,” he agreed. “And yes we definitely want to make sure we check on Star and Hope,” he said, looking over at Brenna.
“Yes!” The little girl stated loudly before she put a finger over her mouth as she realised the baby needed quiet.
“It’s okay baby. We aren’t going to make you be quiet , we live in a busy hold and she needs to get used to sound.” Rena assured kissing her hair again feeling happy and centred again.
Bensen chuckled a bit after Brenna’s enthusiasm. The little girl loved runners like her father had and he loved that she was getting to help with Oseben’s dream. “There is definitely a lot of sound around here,” he agreed.
“Happy hold and happy families are loud.” The woman said quietly as she looked at Bensen. “Can we catch up later?” She asked quietly as Brenna started talking away to the baby. She wanted to spend like with Brenna but she knew that they needed to catch up.
Bensen quickly caught on. “Of course. I have some hide work calling my name. I'll stop by after and check on the three of you,” he promised, leaning over to kiss her forehead.
Rena leaned up and moved her head so she could have a proper kiss despite not having a free hand to keep him there. “I love you.” She whispered softly saying it for the first time after the last crazy 2 months.
He smiled and glady accommodated her with a proper kiss. “I love you too.” He had been so afraid he would lose her and things had been insanelately. .
“We will talk later.” She whispered quietly wishing she could have free hands to touch him and reassure him of how okay she was.
“We will. You enjoy your time with the girls,” he said with a smile. He then kissed Brenna’s hair as well before touching the baby's hand. “I'll be back.”
Rena smiled and nodded as Brenna giggled at the stubble and blew her uncle a kiss. “You better.” Rena whispered quietly to him, smiling. How could things feel so sad but so happy at the same time.
