Rena was dressed up in lady holder clothing for the first time since she had given birth and was standing in the ante chamber not able to go any further. This was the first time that Rena was attending a meal time with the whole hold. She was not nervous but she was embarrassed to be facing everyone after causing such drama at the wedding celebration but Lady Sena had insisted on organising her maid to sit with the children so that everyone could be there.
Bensen tugged at the collar of his high necked shirt as he walked down the hall. you would think one would get used to the fancy clothing but he never had and was always grateful to get out of it. He stopped though when he saw his wife just outside the doors of the dining hall. “Ren?” He asked gently.
“Hey.” Rena said, jumping as she turned to face the man and walked over straightening the collar. “Don’t you look all handsome.” She flirted trying to bid herself a few more minutes to gather herself before she had to go inside.
Bensen smiled. “These collars are a real nuance,” he grumbled, not understanding why the clothes had to be so stiff. “Thank you and you look lovely.” He kissed her cheek. “You doing okay?”
“My cheek?” She laughed, kissing him properly as they were alone. “I am okay… “ she said before seeing his look. He didn’t believe her which was why he was asking. “I am embarrassed. This is the first time I have gone in there.” She admitted reminding him that meals had been in her rooms.
“Well,” he started before she kissed him properly. Bensen raised a brow at the start of her answer. “Oh. Well it's everyone you know,” he said gently. “And if you get too overwhelmed just give a signal and we'll leave,” he promised, stealing another kiss.
“Last time I was there I made a scene and ended a whole celebration. It was not what I wanted but my body had failed.” The woman said quietly, looking up at him. It was going to get awkward.
“It's okay,” he said gently. “You and little Osena are safe. That is what matters and I am not leaving your side for anything,” he promised.
The woman sighed, running her hands down the front of her stomach in the corset. She hated how everyone was being sweet to her about it, even Enabon which was shocking to her. she sighed, throwing her hair over shoulder. “I know you are not Ben.” She looked down at the blue dress that she had not worn in months.
Bensen hated seeing her so worried still. He gently pulled her into his arms. “We don't have to do this,” he said gently. “Mother would understand.” Bensen was not going to let Rena worry all night. Not when she was finally back on her feet.
“No she wouldn’t. She requested everyone and arranged for her maid to sit with our girls.” Rena whispered before she stepped back. “If I do not do it soon I will just continue to eat meals elsewhere.” She explained gently looking up at him.
He inclined his head, not arguing with her. “If you are sure,” he said gently, moving to hold his arm out to her. If she felt she was ready then he would stay close and not question it.
“I look okay right? This is an old dress. I have not worn it since before I was pregnant.” She wondered as she flattened down her dress again. She looped her arm through his squeezing his bicep reassuringly.
“you look beautiful,” he assured her. “As does the dress.” He gave her a reassuring smile, letting her know they were in this together.
The woman smiled at him and blushed under his gaze. “Do not look at him like that.” She pleaded, smiling shyly before she shook her head as the grand hall door was opened.
“Like what?” He asked innocently just before the door was opened. He squeeze her hand before stepping into the Dining Hall.
“Like if I asked you to take me home I’d be in our rooms and out of this dress in minutes,” she whispered as she followed him forward into the dining hall. The room was packed but everyone was laughing and happy which instantly made Rena feel better as they worked their way to the front of the hall.
Bensen grinned. “Maybe,” he agreed, not at all repentant. He stayed close as they walked in. “Mother, father,” he smiled, inclining his head before pulling a chair out for Rena.
“We thought you were not going to show.” Oben said smiling as he spotted the pair finally arrived.
“Apologies, Osena took a little longer to settle.” Rena said curtsying before she sat down, now that she could do that.
Sena shook her head at her husband's words. “We are glad to see you both though.”
Bensen sighed softly. Well that wasn't quite what he had expected. Once Rena was seated he pushed her chair in before taking his own seat.
“Oh yes…. Yes, very glad to see you Rena.” The older man quickly assured not having caught his tone until his wife had shook her head. “I just meant I was worried.” The Lord holder said quietly as he watched Rena smile at Bensen as he offered her bread.
Sena hid a smile behind her hand. She knew her husband meant well. Sometimes his tone just came off wrong.
Bensen glanced at his parents and gave them a smile. “It's okay father. We knew what you meant,” he assured Oben.
“Good. Good. Eat up and enjoy. We have an announcement after the food.” The man said smiling as he indicated he wanted them to eat up and enjoy everything. Rena smiled and nodded settling down to eat the wher beast and vegetables.
“Any idea what the announcement is about?” She wondered off her husband.
Bensen happily started into his meal, but stopped at his father’s words. He shook his head. “I do not have any idea what he is talking about,” Bensen admitted.
Rena shrugged a little but said nothing more as she ate some of her food. She was conscious of the looks towards her but she carried on trying to avoid the gaze towards. “How are you feeling, Lady Rena?” The head woman finally asked as the gazes got too much and everyone was genuinely wondering how the woman was.
Rena looked up. “I am better.” Rena finally murmured taking a sip of the offered wine. Bensen couldn't keep people from looking but he did feel bad for Rena. He knew she didn't like being the center of attention. He reached over and squeezed her hand, still trying to figure out what his father was planning.
“I am glad Lady Rena. My daughter has been asking when you will be returning to her class. She was enjoying learning about the crafts.” The woman carried on as Rena smiled brightly as the squeeze on her hand and the soft words from the head woman as she tried to explain that people were relieved to see her up and looking better.
“Once I am healed fully I will be back.” Rena assured.
Bensen smiled. He had no doubt that Rena was good with the children. He was glad that she would be going back to what she loved soon to. He knew how hard it was to be sidelined from the things you loved. ngs.
“Do not rush. We want you to be healthy.” The head woman said softly thinking back to the last few turns for the woman. It was heartbreaking to see how dark the woman’s glow had become. “But you look happy now.” She approved glancing to Bensen.
They had all gone through a bad spell recently that none of them were sure they would come out of. He smiled at the Headwoman. Rena was a strong woman and he hoped she was happy now.
“And a newborn seems to suit you, Ben.” She approved quickly making Rena chuckle a little and require some more of the wine from her glass. She glanced up at Oben stood up on the platform and looked around the hall waiting for the chatter to die down.
Bensen smiled broadly. “Thank you.” The two girls had become his world very quickly. He looked up as his father stood up, still wondering just what the older man was planning.
The headwoman turned and looked around the hall one more time. “As everyone is aware we have lost people the last turn but we have also gained people, especially in the form of my newest grandchild born just a few sevendays ago.” He raised a glass of his wine in the direction of Rena and Ben. “I would like to proclaim Osena to the Hold formally as my grandchild.” Rena’s heart beat quicker than she expected as Brenna had been formally proclaimed like this or if she had, Rena had skipped out on that.
Bensen glanced at his wife, hoping she was okay. He had not expected his father to do something like that. Not that he wasn't thrilled to hear it but he couldn't tell how Rena was taking it. “Thank you father.”
Rena shakingly raised her glass back to the Lord holder as she clutched Bensen’s hand with the other. “To Osena.” People around them declared and Rena looked around a little stunned.
Bensen gave his wife's hand a reassuring squeeze. Neither of them had been expecting something like this. He raised his own glass. “To Osena.”
Rena smiled finally once the hall had settled back down into eating and drinkingonce things had moved on to Oben talking about the threadfall schedule above them. “I… I didn’t expect that.” Rena whispered to Bensen.
Once it had quieted Bensen took a sip of his wine. He glanced over at his wife. “Nor did I,” he admitted. He wasn't sure what had made his father do that.
“He was worried.” Rena said, catching the older man’s gaze as he watched the pair. She mouthed thank you to him knowing he was not leaving Osena’s parentage in any doubt at all. The Lord holder simply raised his glass to the woman again before turning to his wife. The man might not say much but his actions always spoke volumes. “He was worried people would doubt Osena’s parentage if he left it unsaid even with us married.” She whispered just for him.
Bensen glanced over at his father as Oben started speaking with Sena. A smile touched his lips as he listened to Rena. “That sounds just like father,” he agreed. Now the announcement made perfect sense.
“So she’s all officially yours.” Rena said in a soft sad voice even though she was happy with how it had all turned out. Rena could not doubt she was falling for this man and he was making it very hard to not fall for him with how kind and gentle he was being.
Bensen reached over for her hand. “Ren?” he asked gently. “You know I love Bre already and Osena won't be any different.” Was she not happy? He was trying but he knew she had been through so much.
“I know.” She assured quickly as she glanced around at people. “It’s just a lot right now.” She added gently knowing they could talk more later in private. “But it explains why everyone wanted us here.”
He nodded a bit. He hadn't thought about that but it certainly explained a lot. He had to admit it would be nice to get back to their quiet room again though.
