Kelsa tugged a brush through her hair as she sat on the edge of their bed, a smile on her face.
“I like your family,” she told S'ven. “Your mom is a sweetheart who is very proud of you.”
S’ven looked up from looking at the papers in his hands as she spoke and nodded. “They like you too. Surprised by you but happy.” He commented as he put down the papers on the bedside table. His mum had always been proud, confused but proud. “They are good people.” He finally said. He looked away. “I led you to believe that they hated me didn’t I?”
Kelsa tilted her head a little. “Surprised by me? Because you're a blue rider?” She asked gently. She smiled a bit. They did seem like very good people. “Kind of,” she admitted. “You never really spoke of them to be honest.”
“Yeah…” He said, slowly taking a deep breath as she he wiggled a little more to sit straighter against the wall. “I was the problem. Not them. I was a confused boy when I impressed and I cut contact… I felt like they would never accept me.”
She set her brush down and moved closer to her mate. “Oh, love,” she said softly, giving him a gentle smile. “It's okay. I don’t think they hold that against you. Your mother just misses you.”
He knew his mother missed him. She had blamed herself for the distance, but it had all been on him. He had backed away to allow them to carry on with their lives without him embarrassing them. “I know, but you saw the reaction to you being there.” The man laughed and shook his head as he thought of what the reaction would have been with I'lean.
“That's because I'm lovable,” she teased him, trying to lighten the mood. “But I get it. It's hard to understand dragons and I know you were really young when Dareth chose you.” She couldn't imagine how he must feel.
“Lovable but with a huge ego.” He laughed. “I did not know I liked boys and girls but it’s in the past I suppose now.” It was not something he planned to do often to visit but he could at least make a little bit of an effort to stay in contact.
Kelsa wrinkled her nose at him. “Only cause you give me the big ego,” she grinned. At least he was smiling again. Maybe she could help him with his family a bit. She slowly nodded. “You were only 13.”
“I know. I assumed a lot about my parents that was not correct.” He said quietly, looking at her still smiling. “I seem to assume the wrong thing about a lot of people. Glad I did not assume anything wrong about you.” He said quietly.
She felt bad for him. He had to have been terrified as a 13 year old from a Hold. At least the weyrbrats would have understood. “I don't know, you assume I have an ego,” she teased.
The man rolled his eyes, smiling still. “Have mercy on me?” He begged, shaking his head. He was trying his best, he was trying to be what everyone needed him to be but it was hard sometimes. “I am trying… I am not ashamed but I do feel some discomfort sometimes.” He admitted. Growing up as a crafter did not just leave.
“Hmm maybe,” she grinned, moving over to sit on his lap. “Love you don't have to be someone you're not. I love you the way you are and I understand. I grew up in Far Site,” she whispered, kissing his cheek.
“I know. Could you imagine if I took I'lean home?” He snorted trying to add some
levity to the situation. He was frustrated y it all but it was his issues not hers even if she was working alongside him.
Kelsa groaned at that thought. “Shards, your mother might just chase him out of the house with a broom. Now that is a rider with an ego.” The man was a real pain and she avoided him when she could, but she knew he was apart of what made S'ven the way he was.
“Yeah. But he was kind to me once upon a time. I fancied R’en and when he died I'lean was there for me but certainly I would have never taken him home.” He would not have blamed his mother for chasing him.
“Nerlyn’s brother?” She knew the name. “No don't take him back there,” she agreed. Kelsa couldn't imagine how his poor family would react.
“Yeah…” the man admitted awkwardly, blushing. R’en was one of those people that you could not forget easily. “But any thought of I'lean ever being that involved in my life is firmly over. You have truly shown me the light.” He assured pressing a kiss to her shoulder.
She smiled a bit. “I've heard good stories about him. He seemed like a good man.” She hadn’t known R'en personally. Kelsa shivered a bit as his warm lips touched her bare skin. “Good, cause I don't share well,” she grinned.
R’en was one of the only male green riders who did not spend half his time trying to cause chaos. He could see how well the man could have risen if he had not died. “No sharing.” He assured her quietly. There was not much of him to share but he did not want to be shared himself. “But I do need sleep. I have dawn drills and dawn rises very early in summer in the south.” He sighed a little.
Kelsa could see that thinking about the other green rider was hard for S'ven. She would try not to push that one. “Oh come now blue rider, who needs sleep?” She teased him.
“Me when K’ron and G’len are barking at you.” He laughed, dumping her over on her side of the bed. He did not often tell her no but he really did need sleep.
“Hey!” She laughed from her back. She glared at him playfully before sitting up. “But I get it. I don't want you getting in trouble.”
“Nope I need to have my shards and shells all together.” He leaned over and kissed her softly. Yes he was already thinking about dawn drills and why K’ron was making them do it at that time of day but he did want her there. “But it does not mean you have to come to bed.” He pointed out not wanting to stifle her.
Kelsa nodded. She didn't completely understand the dawn drills but she wasn't a wing leader. She leaned into his gentle kiss. “It will be boring without you,” she said.
“If you are sure but you do not have to settle here and sleep.” S’ven did not want to make her do what he had to do because he was wing leadership.
“I know, blue rider. I know. You just rest.” She would wait til he fell asleep and the head out for a little bit.
