Calarya looked up as the weyrleader finally came back to his office, and she offered a smile. “Want to talk about things, or do you just need wine?” She offered softly, having finished off random reports, so he did not need to when Lana was at High Reaches. She hated feeling useless, so this was the best way for her to help if she was honest. She could not get him to High Reaches and she was not a healer.
A'ren needed something to get his mind off Lana still being gone. He was surprised to find Calarya in his office. “Maybe a little of both,” he admitted, collapsing into one of the chairs.
“I am not sure how fresh your wine is as the Weyrwoman left a note on it.” She laughed as she rose from the chair and poured him a mug. “Well one I can help with but second you need to start that.” The woman said gently as she sat on the couch not feeling comfortable seating at the desk now.
A'ren looked at Calarya. “She left a note on the wine?” Apparently Lana had definitely been thinking ahead. He sighed softly. “I'm worried and don't know how not to be,” he admitted.
The woman held out the note that read: Don’t drink it all. It’s not fresh. It was in the Weyrwoman’s best scrawl. “Of course you are worried. Surprised you did not send me to be honest.” She was surprised still but she could understand why he chose the 3 that he did.
A'ren shook his head as he read the note. Leave it to Lana. He looked up at his friend. “Trust me I considered it,” he assured her. “But I needed someone here who wouldn't let me go out of my mind,” he admitted. Calarya was his oldest friend and she knew him inside and out.
“And how close are we to having that happen?” She wondered crossing her legs as she looked at him. They had not had a deep and meaningful conversation since her flight, well not one sober anyway. She was not drinking as she knew he needed her as well as her own health needed a break.
The Weyrleader considered her words as he absently took a sip of the not so fresh wine. “Getting close. If one more thing goes wrong I can't promise I will react calmly.” He was glad to have Calarya there, even if things had been a bit odd since her flight.
“Well it is getting late. Everyone is nearly asleep or too drunk to care anymore.” She tried to lighten the mood a little. The woman leaned back over the desk to grab up her juice. “I saw you and F’cone looking friendly?” She challenged.
A'ren managed a smile. Calarya didn't miss a thing. “He wanted to know how angry I was at Lana for her being north.” He shrugged a shoulder. “Then Jena nearly had a melt down so yeah. It's been a night.”
“And how angry are you?” It was to be expected with the weyrwomans' 2nd, she was so close to clutching that Zalyith’s emotions and Jena’s were going to be all over the place.
“Very if I'm honest, and I want to go drag her back, but I can't.” That made it even harder. There was absolutely nothing he could do.
Calarya smiled a little. “Lana knew what you would do, which is why she grounded whom she grounded,” Calarya said gently. “Will you calm down by the time she gets home?” She wondered thoughtfully.
Yeah he knew Lana had done it for a good reason. He slowly nodded. “Yeah. Right now it's just a lot and I want to stay angry for a little bit.” He would forgive her once she was safe.
“Oh…” The woman broke into laughter. “Oh so we are doing what you got annoyed at me doing?” She demanded in good humour.
A'ren groaned. “Seriously? You're going to torment me about that now?” He asked, shaking his head with a slight smile.
“Well, yes… it is a bit unfair if I do not. Double standards.” Calarya said, smirking a little bit. If she did not torment him, he would not forgive her later on and call her soft.
He rolled his eyes but nodded. “Okay, okay. So being mad isn't a good idea,” he sighed. Didn't make it any easier though.
“Being angry is okay but having double standards is not fair. You are a better man than that.” She reminded him softly. “You are allowed to be angry but staying there because it’s better than other emotions is not right.”
“Shard it, Calarya. I hate when you're right but it's also why I didn't want you going north. I needed you here.” Next to Lana, Calarya could always talk him down.
The woman laughed mercilessly. She had known it would wind him up enough to bet it out of it. “See you are much nicer than me I told you to jump between.” She joked moving from the chair to sit next to him on the sofa.
“Yeah I remember that quite clearly,” he assured her. She definitely hadn't been happy with him that way. “You just caught me after I've settled down a little bit,” he answered.
“Yeah yeah. I have known you your whole sharding life.” She remained. “I helped you bribe a rider to get yourself to Kymos to go see your grandmother. I know you probably better than the Weyrwoman.” She teased knowing she did not but it was great to tease him sometimes.
He cringed a bit. “Yeah that's true,” he agreed. It was one of the many reasons he had trusted her as his wing second despite being a green rider. “You're probably the only one who can put up with me,” he said.
The woman smirked at seeing him cringe from her comments. She did it often to remind him that he was not infallible. “The Weyrwoman does.” Calarya reminded him with a more gentle smile as she poured some more wine into his mug.
A'ren relaxed a bit against the couch. At least for a few moments he could forget about his worries thanks to Calarya. “Mmm yes she does,” he agreed.
“So none of that, otherwise you’d be my weyrmate or something.” She nudged him.
The Weyrleader actually laughed. “I don't think G'van would appreciate that,” he smiled. It felt good to laugh a bit.
“I think me leaving him for you would be the only way he’d ever forgive me.” Calarya teased rolling her eyes at what it took to get him to laugh.
“Let's not find out,” he smiled. “I'd rather keep you as my best friend.” He always knew they were both very happy with their mates.
“And I don’t like you like that Weyrleader.” She laughed. “You admire your hair too much for me.” She teased him again trying to lighten his mood enough that’s he could leave him.
A'ren stared at her in complete shock. “Excuse me? I do no such thing,” he said before laughing. Calarya always knew how to make him laugh when he was concerned about Lana.
Calarya leveled him a look before she flipped her hair forward and did a perfect impression of the Weyrleader rubbing his hand through his hair to get it out of his eyes. “You do.” She said simply.
He blinked at his friend in disbelief. “So it gets in my face,” he grumbled. He was trying not to laugh as she imitated him.
Calarya just laughed and stood up. “And my work is done. Goodnight A’ren.” She declared heading to the door. She was not about to push her luck when she had just mocked him ruthlessly.
“Good night, Calarya. Thank you.” If it had been anyone else he wouldn't have left them get away with it, but he knew why Calarya had done what she had.
Calarya stopped in the doorway and turned and looked at him thoughtfully. She loved and respected this man but she also knew he had a temper once something triggered it. “Do not be too mad at her when she comes back, Weyrleader. If the roles were reversed any of us would have done the same as we are all decent people.” Calarya reminded him with a nod as she left.
A'ren nodded. “I will remember that,” he assured her. And once he got over his fear of losing Lana and had time to really think he would know Lana was right. It had just scared and angered him to start with.
