Spotted Felines

Location: Herdbeast Barns
Timeline: Just before the storm
Cohan stood at the door to the barn, keeping an eye on the spotted felines who had taken up residence in his pasture. They didn’t seem interested in the herdbeasts at all except to sometimes rub their heads on them and purr.
Which made him chuckle, of course.
But even so, the Lord Holder should know. He had sent an apprentice to notify him that the Beast Master had a situation he needed to see. As of right now, Cohan saw no reason to do anything about it as the herdbeasts didn’t seem to mind, but it was still something that needed to be addressed.
Just in case.
Lord Marcono was confused by the summons to say the least. He had no idea why he would be summoned by the Beast Craft Master of all people, but there he was, out in the brewing storm, followed by his steward and a hold guard. “Cohan?” He called as he saw the man in the doorway.
“Lord Marcono!” Cohan called as he spotted the approaching Lord Holder. “I know the storm is fast approaching, so I’ll try to be brief.” He turned and indicated the pastures. “I was just about to bring the herdbeasts into the barns when I remembered the felines. They’ve been living in the pastures, too, and I don’t rightly know that they’ve got anywhere safe to go. They don’t cause trouble and they seem to follow me around while I’m out here, so I thought I’d bring them in, too.”
Marcono looked at the man, confused for a long moment as he took off the hood of the heavy jacket. “The felines?” The man wondered. “Wait, you mean the large ones?” He realised and looked at the man, even more intrigued.
“Yes,” answered Cohan. “Watch this.” He stepped outside of the barn and reached a hand towards one of the felines, rubbing his fingers together. The feline perked up and slowly came closer. It gently sniffed his hand and then rubbed its muzzle against it. And then, unexpected to all but Cohan, it began to purr.
“See there?” Cohan said, amused. “These ones have been getting friendlier and friendlier in recent turns. They’ve even stopped hunting the smaller livestock and some Beast Masters have even reported them chasing the larger felines away.”
Meanwhile, the feline had spotted the other three men and though it did not retreat or stop purring, it was definitely slightly on guard.
Marcono raised an eyebrow. He had never seen anything like this before and he was amazed by it, he had spent a lot of time at Far Site and the southern beastcraft hold but he had never seen felines this close. “How long has this been happening?”
“For quite some time,” answered Cohan. “As far as living in the pastures with herdbeasts is concerned. But they’ve usually kept clear of humans. They’ve only become comfortable with us in the past couple of turns. Personally, I think they’ve seen the way we treat our felines and canines and want in,” he added with a chuckle.
“I suppose so.” The Lord Holder said, grinning a little at the man's infectious attitude. He was trying to get to know the key players more and more as he settled into the role after everything that had happened. He knew the lies that had been portrayed about him, but he did not think he was a bad man.
“Come on in,” Cohan said to the feline, who had at least stopped staring at the others. “They won’t hurt you.”
The feline gave him a dubious look, but sniffed cautiously towards the men gathered in the barn.
“Blink at her,” he instructed the lord holder. “Real slow. Then look away.”
“As you wish Master Cohan.” The man slowly did as instructed, he blinked slowly and then looked away specifically at the steward who was not sure what to make of all of this.
The feline continued to stare for a moment, then said, “mau!” and turned her attention to the herdbeasts who had already entered the barn.
“You see?” Cohan said to the feline. “I told you they were all right.”
The Lord Holder shook his head. “Just do not get our Herdbeast eaten. I am not explaining to Far Site Hold why we need support and a new herd.” The man said quietly. He was going to have to trust the master crafter on this.
“This variety of feline has never gone after them,” Cohan replied. “I’m pretty sure we’ll be okay. I’ve got a couple of wheries we got hunting to feed them if they get hungry. And worse comes to worst, I wouldn’t miss a few yardbirds. But it’s tricky to get to them without going outside, so I’d rather not have to resort to that. Plus, I hate catching yardbirds.”
“Do you need anything sent down before it rains too heavily?” Marcono wondered looking around at how all the animals had supplies but did the man.
“I’ve planned ahead,” answered Cohan. “I’ve got food enough for five days- overkill perhaps, but you never know. Better safe than sorry. And I’ve got books to keep me entertained. I should be just fine.”
Marcono smiled. “If only things were so easy for me.” He teased wishing sometimes he could be cut off like that and not have to worry but there they were.
“Well it is a big adjustment Lord Holder.” The Steward said, smiling kindly. The man was nothing like the former Lord Holders had declared and he was welcome relief after the last five turns.
Cohan nodded in agreement. “It takes time,” he said. “But, all things considered, you’re doing a fine job.”
The younger man nodded and inclined his head in a thank-you gesture. “Were you here under the former Lord Holder?” Marcano wondered thoughtfully, wondering if he could get some genuine insight on things.
“Aye,” answered Cohan. “I was, unfortunately.”
Marcano frowned a little. “I am sorry that you had to put up with that.” He could not understand how things had gone so badly in Kymos but he was now trying his best to try and change things for the better.
“I like to think I’m better for it,” replied Cohen. “It was rough, but I believe we can learn from everything. And when you learn, you grow.”
“You sound like a Farmercrafter there for a moment.” Marcano teased a little before he glanced back at the large felines. He had no idea what to make of this situation but he needed to let the man make his own choices and this was one of them.
“Well, Beastcrafters aren’t far removed,” Cohan laughed good-naturedly. “Anyway, I just thought you should know. I know you probably want to get back to the Hold proper before the rain starts. I won’t keep you any longer.”
“Come up to the Hold Master Crafter if the rain gets too much.” The Lord Holder said firmly. He did not want people suffering out there protecting beasts and property. It could all be fixed in the coming days.
“Of course,” replied Cohan. But he doubted things would get so bad. The barn was sturdy and not likely to fail him. So, as the other men let, he settled in for the duration.
