K'yar yawned a bit as he jogged toward his weyr. He had finally finished going over all the wing charts with F'cone. Shards he missed Nerlyn as a wing third. She was always so much better at the hide work then he was and she was good at keeping him and F'cone straight. Well at least he was done for the day. Although he couldn't remember what Lenya's schedule was for the day so he didn't know if her and Kiyna were home or not.
Lenya looked up as she heard jogging and then the door being pushed open. She smiled at the man as he came in looking exhausted. she put down the pile of clothes she had been organising with a smile. “Are you okay? You look tired.” She admitted wrinkling her nose at the look on his face.
He looked up quickly, a smile touching his lips when he heard Lenya’s voice. “I'm okay. Finally finished going through all the hides with F'cone,” he answered. The brown rider was usually a very easy going person but F'cone frustrated him at times. “It just really makes me miss having Nerlyn as the wing third,” he admitted, walking over to kiss her gently.
Lenya accepted the kiss quietly before she pulled back and looked at him confused. “But Nerlyn was 2 turns ago. He needs to get a new wingthrid. You look so frustrated.” She said, stroking his cheek. He did not often look like that.
K'yar rolled his eyes with a laugh. “Yeah I've mentioned that,” he assured her, smiling down at her despite his exhaustion. “he just can't seem to settle on one.” He did feel bad for F'cone in that respect. He leaned into her gentle caress.
“Maybe mention it to Nerlyn?” She whispered knowing that the dolphineer had some sway over the man or at least could make him realise that he had to pick. she kept her hand there just looking at him. “Hate that you have come home so late. Kiyna is sound asleep by the way. She was so tired after we went swimming that she couldn’t keep herself awake waiting for you.”
He nodded. He might have to do that. They needed another set of hands. K'yar cringed. “I'm sorry about that. We lost track of time. Kiyna wasn't too upset was she?” He asked, feeling bad.
“Too tired to be upset.” Kiyna had spent far too long in the water trying to cool off but she was getting to be a confident swimmer which was great with being where they were. “You always lose track of time.” She teased stepping back to continue finishing up her chores otherwise no one would find clothes soon.
K'yar felt bad about that. “I hope she at least had fun swimming.” He owed them both some time with him. His next rest day he was going to make sure they had time. “Can I help? He offered, seeing her with the clothes.
Lenya raised an eyebrow at his offer before grinning as he genuinely meant to help her. “Do you know where clothes live?” She teased, still looking up at him holding out a pile that were his clothes folded and ready for him to take.
“Not on the couch?” He asked innocently, taking his clothes. “I do know where they go,” he promised. He just didn’t always remember to put them there.
“Then you can have them.” She said passing him the pile before taking Kiyna’s clothes from the pile she had created to where they could be put away in the morning before picking up her own clothes following him into the bedroom.
K'yar headed for their room, ready to prove he could put things away. He pulled out a drawer to put the nicely folded clothes in. “See?” He said, proud of himself.
Lenya rolled her eyes. “Will make a drudge out of you yet.” She commented with a smirk. She did not care that her position was low in the Weyr, she enjoyed the change of pace and differences every day.
K'yar pulled a face before laughing. “Maybe,” he grinned. He then playfully caught her around the waist. “I'll make it up to you guys for being home late,” he whispered.
Lenya yelped as he playfully caught her and pulled her close to him. She stood up fully and turned to look up at him. “Nothing to make up for K’yar,” She promised. She knew he really had not meant to be late, he had learned his lesson around working to hard.
He chuckled a bit, setting her back on her feet. “Couldn't resist,” he smiled, glad that they seemed to understand each other now. They had had a rough patch but things were finally looking up.
“I am sure you could have.” She laughed, swatting his shoulder so she could turn away and put the clothes away properly. She was not so rose tinted anymore that her life depended on him. She could go out and do things.
“But why should i?” He grinned, bouncing back on his heels to keep from getting swatted. He was smiling though as even though he was tired he was happy.
Lenya shook her head as she put the last of the clothes away. “Story of your life there, brown rider.” She said, grinning at him. The man for as long as she had known him had resist anything.”
K'yar raised a brow. “Ah not sure if that was a compliment or a put down,” he admitted, a smile on his face. With her he wasn't sure, but he knew he didn't want to resist her.
“Take it how you want. It’s just based on observation.” She stated quietly with a roll of her eyes as she shrugged. She had not meant it badly just that he had never resisted anything.
The brown rider chuckled a bit. He was actually too tired to make sense of her words. “Okay okay,” he agreed. “I need to learn restraint.”
She held her thumbs together to show just a little before she smiled. “Get to bed.” She encouraged seeing how tired he was. She would have loved to spend some time with him but he looked shattered.
He laughed softly. He would have to work on that. “I'm okay,” he promised. “No sense in rushing off to bed.” He wanted to spend some time with her first if she let him.
“Okay well then what would you like to do?” She wondered softly looking at him looking relaxed again.
“Can we just talk? I feel like we haven't gotten to do that in a while.” They had both been busy but this quiet time would be nice.
“Sure.” She was not sure what was going on or why suddenly he wanted to talk but she was more than happy to just do that if he wanted to do that. “Why don’t you relax and I’ll just change.” She suggested seeing he wanted to just relax and talk.
K'yar nodded and collapsed back on their couch. He knew it was an odd request but he couldn't help it. He just wanted to be with his family.
Lenya smiled watching him leave going out to the living area. She quickly went and brushed her teeth and hair changing out of her simple dress into what she normally slept in which was a long thin nightdress. “So?” She wondered as she came out.
He patted the couch next to him. “I just wanted to spend some time with you. I know I've been busy lately and I just miss you guys.”
The woman came over and curled up next to him on the couch. “Right here.” She promised and leaned out to touch his forearm. She had to admit that she had not overly noticed a change in his routine when the Weyr as a whole had been busy but she had been working more herself. “But I have been busy too.” She shrugged a little.
He curled his arm around her shoulders and nodded. “And i’m glad you're here.” He blew out a soft breath. “It does seem like everyone has been busy lately,” K'yad agreed, drawing light circles on her shoulder.
“Lots of new people.” She admitted with a smile. It was nice to meet people who did not know her drama or anything that has happened.
“That's true. It's been nice for the wings, but also more work getting in sync with everyone.” It was nice to have new people at the Weyr and ones who could help fill the voids.
Lenya pursed her lips together for a moment. “It’s nice to have people who do not stare at me with pity.” The woman said gently. She wanted him to know why she kept such a low profile being a drudge.
K'yar turned his head at her words the low light reflecting in his eyes and off the scar that would forever be a reminder of what they nearly lost. “I'm sorry, Len. I didn't realize.”
“It’s okay. You do not need to apologise.” She assured him quietly as she felt him love to look at him but she didn’t respond or move. “But it’s nice to not have to worry about it. Nice to feel like I can move on without that shadow.” She shook her head and looked at him smiling sadly.
he should have realized. Should have paid more attention to the needs of his mate. What was he thinking? He reached over and gently lifted the hand that she wore the ring he had had commissioned for her. “I am glad you can be happy again. I see that girl I started to fall in love with in the hut when we talked about the stars.”
Lenya smiled a little brighter at his comment about her being happy. “I am happy. Things are stable and that shadow that has been over me has gone. I do not need to keep watching my back or worry that I am going to bleed out on some floor.” She looked at the hand in his and smiled. She had only just started to wear the ring again and she only wore it when she felt like it.
He shuddered at the memory or nightmare. They had both nearly died that day. “Yes, let's not do that again. I want to lay under the stars and have you tell me about all the different ones and your father,” he smiled, playing with her ring. He had never actually asked her how she felt about the ring.
“One day I am sure we can do that again.” She promised already thinking of doing it. It would be a nice change of pace to lie on the ledge and just star watch. It really did remind her of nights on the ship where her favourite taught her.
“I would like that a lot,” he agreed. Those talks had led to little Kiyna who he loved despite the circumstances behind her birth. He couldn't imagine life without Lenya and Kiyna.
Lenya nodded and slowly pulled her hand back and smiled a little at him. “Me too.” She assured quickly thinking she could organise it for the next rest day that they had together.
K'yar reluctantly let her take her hand back, not wanting to be pushy or anything. He then rests his head back against the couch, closing his eyes. “How was your day today?”
“Helped with the lower caverns expansion and then went swimming.” It had been a pretty normal day. She was glad that Tula had her organising the expansion of reclaiming parts of the lower caverns that had not been used in turns. It had been enjoyable to spend time with people and just talking about things that had no connection to her daughter or her past.
“That sounds like a busy but nice day.” He was so glad Lenya had found a place she was happy and could be herself.
“It’s not a craft but Tula seems so happy and self assured and hopefully I can be like that completely.” She envied the older woman who had taken her under her wing.
K'yar smiled after her enthusiasm. “It takes just as much work and commitment as a craft,” he assured her. “I don't know what we would do without Tula.” He knew the woman kep the Weyr running.
“Let’s hope we never need to find out.” Lenya said gently pulling the blanket off the back of the couch wrapping it around her shoulders. She was under no illusions about her life and place in the Weyr but it felt good to be where she was.
He had to agree. That wasn't something he wanted to even think possible for a very long time. “Have you made friends with any of the new arrivals?” He asked curiously. he hadn't gotten a chance to meet very many of them besides his new wing mates.
“I’ve spoken to a few of the riders when they’ve needed help but not many they are still getting used to the differences between south and north but some of them have been nice.” She assured it was mostly the women of the lower cavern that she spent time with now she no longer spent time cleaning weyrs or the cavern.
“Yeah I've only been able to meet the ones in my wing so far. I agree. They have a lot to get used to. I hadn't realized how many differences there were.” It was so odd that the Weyrs could all be so different.
“We’ll get there. Weyrs always seem to from my experience over the last few turns.” The woman said not having realised herself but she had been brought up in a sea cot hold until Dragon Hold had taken her.
K'yar glanced over at his mate, giving her a sleepy smile. “You are very right. It will just take time.” He had no doubt that things would settle into a rhythm with time.
“Go to bed. You are too big for me to carry you to bed.” She teased, smiling. She knew he wanted to talk but he looked more and more exhausted by the second. It would do no good for him to feel like that. “We can talk whenever you want to K'yar, you just need to ask.” She nudged him, smiling.
He chuckled a bit. “Nah, you would just have to leave me here,” he smiled, before forcing himself to get up. He really did need to listen to her. “Alright, you win. But when I'm more awake we can talk more,” he smiled. “maybe the three of us can spend the day together.”
“I’d put a blanket over you though.” She smiled a little at him when he finally gave in and admitted he needed sleep. “We can talk then. I’m not on a rest day for a couple more days but I would like that when I am.” She assured helping him up with a gentle shove.
“And I appreciate the thought,” he assured her. K'yar nodded. “Same.” He bent over to kiss her gently. “Then I shall see you when you come to bed,” he smiled.
the kiss made her smile and run her thumb over his lips. “Just going to read a book and then I’ll be coming to bed.” She assured him, leaning over to grab her book from the table. She loved nothing more than evenings reading and the familiar sounds of the Weyr, her home.
He reluctantly pulled away with a smile. “Enjoy your book,” he whispered, stretching a bit before heading back to bed.
