Personality & Traits

General Overview Chellis is anything but tame. She's a wild creature in a human form full of curiosity and daring and far too much passion for any one person. She can't be bound in a fine gown and slippers. Within five heartbeats the slippers would be off and forgotten, the sash in a tree, and the overdress tossed in the mud while she waded hip deep in a river. She is defiant, startlingly loud when she wants to be, and full of sharp or bony edges at will. When she's happy, she quiets, and that thunderstorm of a soul becomes this cool breeze. She slows and lingers, sings her grandmother's songs softly, and simply exist alongside nature. The only thing that you can be certain of with Chellis is that she's always busy doing something.

History

Personal History According to Chellis' father she and a younger brother named Avi were both born in a hold to the south that he refused to name. Her mother, Dira, and infant brother both died- that she knows, but not how- and as a result her father Romel and Grandmother Bode chose to become holdless rather than stay. Chellis remembers none of it. Her earliest memories were fields of wildflowers and grassy steppes, foraging and wading in streams.

She grew up barefoot and wild, constantly on the move as her father insisted that they travel until. Not until when or until what, just until. As they traveled he taught her all kinds of wildcrafting and how to make rough tools: skills that she'd need to survive should anything ever happen to him since Grandmother Bode's mind was rarely in this time and place. It was as if he foreshadowed his own death by infection not four years in, leaving Chellis and Bode to wander alone when she was naught but ten.

It was luck that kept them safe in the early days. Luck and careful observation of the animals, the rings of the trees, the patters that the grass burned in and how the insects colored or swarmed. At times Bode would dip into the present and share stories or lessons. Most often she wandered aimlessly singing high and breathy songs softly to herself. Chellis' companions were mostly whatever small creature she could capture and stuff in a fold of cloth, not other people as she'd been warned to avoid them for as long as she could remember.

The reason why Chellis discovered at sixteen when a group of herders from Tyreth Hold happened upon their camp one night in search of a beast that was missing. There was no proof that they had anything to do with it beyond the wagging tongue to hearsay, but that didn't stop them from charging in rough and ready to swing. Bode was easily caught even if Chellis gave a good chase and left plenty of bites and bruises on her captors before they could drag her back and lock her up.

It was no longer a matter of whether they had taken the beast and more an issue of two women alone, and how they were safer forced to accept the protection of the hold. In repayment they were to act as scullery, or harvester, or whatever else was needed so long as they were watched. It was assumed that Chellis was touched in the head as Bode surely was, and since she rarely spoke when screaming was much more cathartic.

Very few people in Tyreth managed to garner enough trust that Chellis spoke to them or shared her insights. Lord Freyr's daughter Vela, a guard name Saul, and the assistant cook Sisah all knew better than to write her off. They each shared very sincere and private friendships with her when most others only got to see her fangs. They helped her through Bode's passing her 18th year, and also tipped off the Search riders to look past her feral guise a month later.
