Physical Appearance

Physical Description Ouemi is tall and well muscled, but with a softness and curves that identify her as all woman. She keeps her dark hair short because it looks thin when it gets long. She has hazel eyes and a round face. She is always complaining that her ample chest gets in the way more often than it's worth. Her eyebrows are thick, but shapely and carefully groomed. Her hands are large- as big as most men's- yet delicate. Her hazel eyes have a way of conveying her mood perfectly. They can be friendly or dangerous, happy or sad, tranquil or excited. The rest of her face remains relatively expressionless.

Personality & Traits

General Overview Ouemi is what is known as an ambivert- or an introverted extrovert. In other words, she likes people, but needs her alone time. She is often the first to leave a party, and often does so after having a phenomenally good time and being the center of attention for a couple of hours. She enjoys being around people and not interacting with them. Because of this, relationships are difficult. She often wants to spend a lot of time with new friends, then suddenly drops off the face of Pern for a week or so. It has caused many misunderstandings as her friends think they've done something to make her angry and as a result, she has very few friends. Romantic relationships are even worse because men will inevitably think she's depressed and keep trying to cheer her up with their presence, but because she doesn't know what the problem is, she just assumes that she's tired of them and breaks it off.

Despite all of this, she remains a loyal friend, even when her friends have abandoned the relationship. She will defend her friends against anyone who would do them harm, either physical or emotional. She also defends the weak, becoming a bully to the bullies. (If they stop bullying, so does she.) She does not tolerate intolerance of any kind. Though easygoing and quick to forgive, she can be rather vindictive if the slight was against one of her friends.
Sexuality Heterosexual

History

History Born to a woodsmith and the headwoman of High Reaches Hold, Ouemi spent her childhood bouncing between the kitchens and her father's workshop. She learned cooking and cleaning as well as basic wood maintenance and repair. Though she loved cooking, she decided to apprentice her father when she turned 13.

At the age of sixteen, her father sent her to the Smithcraft hall at Telgar. She was, perhaps, a bit too immature to be away from her family, and this is when her need to sometimes be alone developed. This suited woodworking, as a lot of the work could be done in solitary. She earned her Journeyman knots at the age of 19 and, at the request of her father, was sent back to High Reaches.

She had been back home for exactly a week when dragons came on search. She ignored it at first because the dragons came to the hold frequently, but took notice when one of them mentioned that while there had been 8 to 10 eggs on the hatching sands in recent years, this time, there were 42! They didn’t have enough Weyrlings for all the eggs, so they had come on search. One of the dragons insisted that she would make an excellent green rider and, after the urging of her mother, she decided to go to the Weyr. (Her younger brother was searched at the same time.)

At the Weyr, her pattern of needing people and isolation deepened until the periods were drastically noticeable. She made many friends, but failed to keep the vast majority of them. She came to the attention of the mind healers, who thought that perhaps she was experiencing severe depression, but no other evidence of this theory was ever found. She always seemed happy when she was alone. She just didn't want people at those times. They finally realized that she was taking it in turns to be an introvert and an extrovert.

Though the Weyrleaders were reluctant to let her stand, fearing the depression (which, you will be remember, had been disproven) would affect the young dragon, but the mind healers insisted that she was fine and perhaps a dragon would help.

Xoviorath was the last dragon to hatch and took her time looking over each and every candidate left standing- which was a very LONG time as there were more than 20 candidates left. (Her brother had impressed a bronze.) Eventually, after passing over her twice, she chose Ouemi.

While Ouemi's swings became less severe, they did not vanish entirely. She still feels the need to be alone once in awhile, but during this time, she enjoys watching people. She just won't interact with them with the exception of children. She will always stop to chat with kids, no matter what else is going on. She likes to make them feel like they belong in a world that clearly belongs to the grown-ups.

Xoviorath's first flight was her first experience with a man and she was not impressed. If was too fast, too ravaging, too dissatisfying. So it remained until along came V'tor, a brown rider with an easy smile and an eye for Ouemi. The two were together for three months- she found that sex without a dragon's involvement was MUCH more satisfying- before the need to be alone overtook her. Perhaps, had V'tor realized that she was not sad and had left her alone for a bit, things may have turned out okay. But, as it was, he kept trying to cheer her up with his presence, which only succeeded in driving her away. They split rather nastily and never spoke to one another again.

There were many turns between relationships, but after the third one failed, Ouemi decided that men just could not hold her attention. She thought maybe she was into women and didn't know it, but gave up on that idea after kissing one grossed her out. She decided that she just wasn't cut out for relationships.

When Thread returned- as everyone had suspected that it would but hoped that it wouldn’t- the Weyrs were prepared. Or at least, the ones that had not been abandoned were. All the active Weyrs had experienced a sudden increase in eggs on the sands in the previous three to five years and had begun training to fight thread. During her first threadfall, Ouemi caught a small amount of thread on her left shoulder and though she had Xoviorath winked between quickly, she was left with a small thread score that left a bit of a scar.

Five turns into threadfall, during a particularly nasty fall, Ouemi’s brother was killed. She had heard the dragon scream and then her wing leader ordered her back to the Weyr. When Xoviorath would not tell her who had slipped between, she knew who it had been. The following two weeks were terrible and her only firm memories were of her usually strong father weeping. Eventually, though, she knew she had to return to the Weyr. She is now extra careful while fighting thread because she doesn’t think her mother can handle losing another child. Life passed more or less normally and Ouemi learned to live without her brother and best friend, though she still thinks of him almost daily.

Then the call came from the Southern Continent for more fighting dragons. Though it would take her even farther from her family, the allure of adventure called her- and besides, Xoviorath could bring her back to the Reaches any time she liked. So off she went.
