Laliy was starting to feel cross eyed as she stared at the hides on the desk. Micayith was sleeping so she had wanted to look at some of the hides, not realizing what she had gotten herself into. She blew out a breath, causing her feline Mirage to meow at her for disturbing the feline's rest.
“Sorry sweetheart,” she crooned.
Jena looked up from where she had been looking over her wingsecond stuff to sign it all over to the brown rider who was replacing her when Zalyith clutched and was tied to the hatching ground. She smirked when the feline junoed up and decided to head under the third desk in the office. “That was a deep sigh.” Jena said smiling a little softer when she looked at the girl thinking how young she was compared to her when she had impressed.
Mirage found another spot to curl up and sleep while she waited for her pet. Laliy looked up quickly, coloring a bit when she realized she may have disturbed Jena. “sorry. It is just a lot to take in,” she admitted.
“Of course it is. You should have been doing this since Micayith hatched but you are not meant to get it correct at first. What has the Weyrwoman currently assigned you to do?” Jena wondered quietly as she moved from her desk to the chair by the side of the desk.
Laliy bit her lip. She had heard that. “I know they were trying.” She hadn't realized just what pressure the Weyrleader and Weyrlingmaster had been under. “Just some basics at the moment. Learning some about the Weyr.”
Jena picked up the hides and smiled. “Fostering records are good place to start.” She approved putting them back down. “You are not meant to remember all of this right now but it’s a good place to start as you will spend a lot of time with the women of the lower caverns.” She assured knowing it was where she started.
The young gold rider nodded a bit. “That makes sense then. I don't think I could remember it all right now if I wanted to.” She hadn't really realized how much was involved.
“It gets easier once you recognise faces.” She promised. “Though I do still get a few sisters mixed up.” She admitted rolling her eyes at Jeasa and Jensa and her inability to tell them apart after five turns.
Laliy laughed a bit. “I think it's like that everywhere,” she smiled. “There was a pair on the boat I grew up on that I always got mixed up,” she admitted. Of course she was pretty sure they enjoyed pulling that stunt on people.
Jena gave her an aha look as it proved her point about how it took time to know people. “So show yourself a little kindness. You are doing the best you can between studies, Micayith, new home and new duties.” Jena reminded gently. Lana would say the same if she was there she knew it.
Laliy nodded. “I'm trying. It is just a lot and something I must admit I never thought about. Not that I would trade Mic,” she grinned. That gold was her world now.
“And the Weyrleaders do not expect miracles as you’ve been here for 3 sevendays.” Jena reminded as she stood to get some juice for them both. “I never got to look at anything until we were nearly graduating Weyrlinghood.”
“Has it really been that long? Shards, it feels like I just got here.” She was liking River Cove a lot. “They definitely don't seem pushy or demanding.”
“No, why I stay here despite the offer of going to your former home.” She laughed gently. “I want this place to be my home. I grew so much when I first came here from my sea cot hold.” She smiled at the girl seeing herself in her. “It all comes together. Lana has never steered me wrong.”
Laliy laughed a bit. “Yeah I do not blame you. The Weyrleader is kind there but he still lost since the Weyrwoman passed away.” The young girl smiled. “I have noticed that. I am looking forward to getting some actual lessons and learning,” she admitted.
Kind but lost could have described A’ren beginning of last year when he won back Weyrleadership and had to try and bring some structure to the Weyr again and work on things with Lana. She shook her head at that time in her life. “The Weyrlingmaster team is great. Strict and kind.” It was exactly what they needed as weyrlings to learn the ropes and find their place in the Weyr.
Laliy didn't know about the past leadership struggle so all she had was her experience so far. “They seem great. The other weyrlings are too. At High Reaches it was almost like they didn't know how to act with a gold weyrling.”
“They most likely didn’t know. If there are leadership gaps there is likely to be things missing.” F’cone had done similar things not knowing things but it had all worked out in the end. “But I am glad you are happy here. Means your queen will thrive here when you are ready.” She smiled knowing it would be turns till the Queen rose but it would give her plenty of time to sort out her view on everything.
Laliy nodded a bit. She hadn't thought about that. It made sense though. “I am happy here. Lots to learn but lots of nice people too.” Micayith seemed happy so that was even better.
“Ask the Weyrlingmaster staff questions or ask me and the Weyrwoman. We are here to help and to make sure you and Micayith thrive.” It was also one of her main tasks after being Lana’s second was making sure everyone thrived.
“I'll do that. thank you.” She felt like she would actually get answers here. “Mic seems to love it here,” she assured Jena as Mirage peeked out from under the desk at them.
“All that matters.” She pointed out smiling a little. If the dragon was happy, so was the rider. It was a simple way of life. “So how about instead of reading about people we go for a walk and I introduce you to people?” Jena wondered softly thinking she could use stretching her legs a bit after being in stuck in the office since breakfast.
“Really? that sounds great.” Laliy knew she still had a lot of people to meet. And it would be a lot easier to do with someone who already knew the people at the Weyr.
“Come on then grab your jacket.” She hinted knowing it would identify her easier as well as a Weyrling but also as a gold Weyrling rider. “A candlemark then I deliver you back to the barracks.” She grinned picking up her own jacket so it was subtle why she was doing it.
Laliy jumped to her feet and quickly got her jacket. She also snagged Mirage who easily snuggled down into the makeshift satchel Laliy had. “All set,” she smiled, realizing why they were taking their jackets after Jenagot hers.
“Come on then.” Jena said as the realisation passed over the girl's face as she realised. She was a quick learner which was good especially as Jena was going to have less time to help her over the next 2 months.
Laliy was going to take whatever help she could get while it was there. And Jena seemed very willing to help. “Where are we going first?”
“Lower caverns. Let’s go see what the harpers are up to.” She decided, thinking knowing the Weyr harpers were the best place and plus she knew that Halia would not mind being interrupted by them being there for a few minutes. She also had an ulterior motive in wanting to check in on the woman.
Laliy bobbed her head. She knew the Harpers seemed to know everything about the Weyr they were part of plus just about anything else. She happily followed
Finish?
