FSH:: Rope Burn

Mission: 3531 AL
The dark colored runner snorted as Bensen stood in the middle of the round pen, making the runner move in circles around him. Thunder wasn't at all happy about it but the stallion hadn't had a good workout in a while and Bensen wasn't about to chance being thrown before running some of Thunder's energy out.
Senabena looked over the stall of the round pen and shook her head. She was not at all sure this was a good idea in the slightest. “And why are you going to do this again Ben?” She challenged gently watching the runner look up at another familiar voice.
Bensen glanced at his sister, not taking his eyes off Thunder. “Because Thunder needs to get some of that energy out and without lounging him the next rider could get hurt,” he answered.
Senabena sighed. She really did not like this. “I really do not like this Ben. What has Master Tanroc said?” She wondered, thinking of the master beastcrafter and his opinion on it all.
“Are you really that worried?” He asked as he stepped in front of Thunder to make the runner change direction. Not to mention he needed to do something that wasn't hidework. “I haven't asked him as I wasn't trying to ride Thunder or anything.” The runner stopped at the top of the round pen away from Bensen, watching the siblings curiously.
“Yes I am worried. You aren’t taking him out?” She demanded softly, feeling the tension leaving her body a little. She had assumed he was going to be taking the runner out and getting himself hurt.
He shook his head. “Not right now. Just making him stretch his legs from the safety of the ground.” It would depend on how Thunder reacted if Bensen tried to ride him or not.
“Good. Because no one should be getting on him until we are sure.” Senabena relaxed enough to look at the runner properly, seeing how he snorted again but carried on in circles taking it all in his stride.
Bensen nodded. “I know,” he promised. Thunder tossed his head and stamped his hoof. The runner definitely needed to burn off some energy.
Senebena nodded. She believed him as he rarely lied about anything like that. “What about putting him out in the large pasture?” She wondered thoughtfully as she saw Rena walking in direction looking confused as she spoke to Master Tanroc obviously asking if Bensen was around.
The young man considered his sister's words. “It's worth a try,” he finally agreed, calling the runner back to him. The pasture just might let the stallion burn off some energy without hurting anyone. He hadn't noticed Rena yet as he was still watching Thunder.
The young woman said nothing as she watched her brother work the horse. But she could see what he meant about the stallion needing to burn off energy. Senabena smiled as Rena reached them and looped her arm through hers as she watched her husband.
Bensen finally clipped the rope back onto Thunder's halter. The lounging didn't seem to be settling him down any. The runner needed the open air. Hopefully the field would work. Otherwise it was going to take one of them riding him. He turned and smiled as he realized Rena had joined Senabena. “Hi Ren.”
“Hello… what are we up to?” She wondered having let her class go early as everyone was a little to wild before rest day to get anything taught other than silly games which she had done until she couldn’t any more. Thank Faranth her students that afternoon were all apprentices who could go to their craft masters and hopefully learn some sensibilities.
Bensen smiled at his wife. “Just trying to get this one to run some energy off,” he admitted. “It's not working well though.” Thunder snorted, clearly not happy to still be standing there.
Rena nodded. She could see that to say the least. She wished she had an idea on how to help the runner, she hated seeing Oseben’s runner being so
unhappy and no one wanting to ride him through fear of being hurt. “I can see.” She said sadly.
Bensen patted the runner's sweaty shoulder. “We'll get him sorted out,” he promised. “For now we'll let him loose in the big pasture.” Hopefully that would do that trick.
Rena nodded. She knew her husband would try his best to sort out the runner. “Do you need my help?” She wondered gently not d as sure west she could do but she wanted to offer.
“Just let me get him in the pasture then you can help me with Star and Hope. Hope is growing like a weed,” he grinned, leading the still very agitated stallion out of the round pen.
Senabena smiled as her and Rena spoke about things as they walked over to where Star and Hope were trotting around a larger stall. “They are both doing well.” Senabena confirmed as Star ignored them but Hope came intrigued over.
Bensen had to struggle to keep the stallion under control. He was being much more feisty than normal. Just as Bensen unclipped the rope Thunder tore off through the pasture, tearing the rope through Bensen’s hands. He cursed under his breath, really hating that horse sometimes. He glanced down at the rope burn across his palms before sighing and going to find the girls.
Senabena turned as she saw her brother return and smiled. “You good?” She wondered seeing him shaking his hands out as Rena stood inside the stall smoothing the foal’s fur.
“Sharding runner,” he grumbled, studying the raw spots that bled in a couple places. Hope whinnied softly at Rena, loving the attention.
Senabena came over as she saw the grumbling and grabbed his hand. “Rope burn. He ran, and you did not let go. Go talk to your wife about her plans for her rest day, and I will go and get a healer's kit.” She sighed and disappeared to find a healer's kit.
Bensen growled a bit. “Didn't get a chance to let go,” he answered, before wincing a bit. He did nod though, knowing not to argue. Instead he just walked over to where Rena was still with Hope.
Rena smiled at the man as he joined her. “Hello husband.” She greeted him looking at him thoughtfully. She had not had a chance to speak to him as he had been up so early.
“Good morning,” he smiled, liking the sound of husband on her lips. “Sorry I left so early this morning.” He leaned on the stall door.
“It’s okay Candence took your spot and then Osena and then Brenna.” She teased gently before looking over. “I was not lonely.”
Bensen rolled his eyes with a laugh. “Well I'm glad you weren't lonely,” he grinned. He wished he would have been there to see that though. Hope gently nuzzled Rena's leg. The little foal loved people.
Rena grinned at the way he looked at her before she jumped at the foal nuzzling her. “Oh I am sorry Hope I was ignoring you wasn’t I.” She laughed feeling bad that she had done that.
Hope bobbed her head. Bensen chuckled. “Bre has her spoiled,” he smiled. “That little filly follows her everywhere.” He was so glad Hope had gotten her mother's personality.
“Well that is positive because she is sweet.” Rena smiled stroking her nose as she watched Senabena coming back carrying a small healer's kit. “What do you need that for Abe?” She wondered. Senabena looked at Bensen and rolled her eyes.
“Your husband got hurt with Thunder.” The woman snitched not carrying.
Bensen narrowed his eyes at his sister. “It's just rope burn,” he assured Rena. “Nothing to be worried about.” Hope leaned into Rena's light touched.
Rena smiled at the runner, it was nice to be appreciated by a runner instead of glared at like her sire did. “Well your sister has cleaner hands she can sort you out.” Rena said, shaking her head at the way he tried to hide it but was unable to against the 2 women.
He blew out a frustrated breath. “Okay okay,” he finally caved in, turning toward his sister. He knew the two of them wouldn't let up until he let Senabena see.
“I’ll do the cleaning out in here and you get fixed up.” The harper assured as she looked around for the pitchfork to get to work manual work for once.
Bensen started to protest but stopped himself. He knew Rena knew her limits and it was nice to see her with the runners. Not to mention he knew she was safe with Hope and Star. “Alright Sen. Guess I'm all yours.”
“Five minutes and you can go back to making eyes at your wife.” She indicated the bucket of clean water and popped his hands in to clean off most of the dirt before she put some numbweed on to it. “Thankfully it doesn’t look bad, just annoying I bet.” She commented sadly.
He hissed in pain when the water hit the raw spots on his hands. “Very annoying,” he agreed. “Should have known that beast would try something.” Thunder had been unusually rank that day.
“Course. I do wonder if he needs a woman to train him. He was nowhere near this aggressive with Rena or any of the other journeywomen.” Senabena said quietly, knowing he would not like the suggestion, but from her observation he did not seem quite so reluctant to engage.
Bensen stared at his sister like she had grown a second head. “Not that I don’t think women are quite capable but I wouldn’t want any of you to get hurt.” He just couldn't figure out what had gotten Thunder so riled up.
Senabena smirked and rolled eyes not having expected him to be happy but she was surprised with his reaction to it all. “Just a suggestion.” She commented as she finished up. He was not the type to be sexist or anything, she could just see the worry from her brother.
He sighed in frustration. He didn't like the idea but it might be worth a try. “Maybe,” he finally conceded as Hope nuzzled Rena again. “We have to try something.”
“See what mother and father think as well as the Master Beastcrafter.” Senabena suggested as she patted his shoulder heading back over to Rena who was nearly finished cleaning the stall out.
“Told you I could do it.” Rena said smiling. “You good?” She wondered looking at the man’s hands.
He nodded. “I'll do that. We have to figure something out.” He flexed his fingers, wincing slightly but not as badly as before, following Senabena back over to Rena.
“You did a great job, love,” he smiled. “I'm okay. Sen got me all fixed up.”
“Good.” The woman smiled as she finished, wheeled the wheelbarrow out of the stall, and closed it behind her. “Just keep the numbweed on it.” She advised.
Bensen nodded. “I will.” He knew how bad rope burn hurt without numbweed. Especially one like this that was deep in spots. Sharding stallion anyhow.
Rena smiled. “So what is next? I can help.” She wondered, deciding she could help him as his hands were not working well.
Bensen was surprised by her offer, but tried not to show it. It would be nice to have her. “Well, the other mares and foals need fed,” he answered.
“Well, you tell me what to do and I’ll do it.” Rena said, taking off her jacket and hanging it up with his.
“I will help too,” Senabena said quietly, not wanting the woman to overexert herself when she was not entirely sure she was fully signed off from the healers.
Bensen nodded his thanks to Senabena. He didn't want Rena to overdo it but he also didn't want to dissuade her from helping. “Let's get the feed measured out then.”
“Lead the way.” Rena said quietly, smiling as she returned to the pair. She did not get a chance to do physical work like that often so it would be nice to do something strenuous and feel like she had done something.
Bensen led them to the feed room where the buckets were all set up to fill for the mares. The foals were still nursing so there was no worry there. “They each get one scoop of grain.”
“Easy peasy right?” Senabena said automatically picking up the correct tool to start organising things as Rena looked around familiarising herself quietly before picking up another scoop.
“Been a long time since I’ve been doing this.” She admitted laughing. “I used to help Oseben before Brenna was born and I needed a walk.” She admitted. It was a way for them to talk and meet when their days were busy.
“Really?” Bensen asked. “I didn't realize that.” Of course there was a lot he didn't know about his brother's life. “Then this should be easy. I'll grab the other things.”
“How we used to meet up some nights.”
The woman admitted as she watched her husband wander off to get stuff. She smiled fondly at the man and shook her head as she watched him leave her and Senabena alone.
Bensen smiled. Now that sounded like his brother. He quickly moved around to grab a few extra herbs to add in for the nursing mares to help them. He soon returned and started helping to mix them in with the grain, wincing a little.
Senabena smiled as the pair chatted back and further about things as they set everything up until the man came back. The Harper shook her head taking the jars of herbs from him. “Just let us do this. Go back to the hold.” Rena said, seeing the wincing.
Bensen stared at his wife. “Seriously? You think I'm just going to leave you two? I am okay. I just gripped the jar wrong.” He wasn't going to let a little rope burn slow him down.
Rena glanced at Senabena and winked.“And why can’t you just leave the two of us hmm?” Rena wondered looking up at him grinning as she put the jars down.
He opened his mouth to explain, but quickly closed it. He knew that look. No matter what he said the girls would use it against him. He finally blew out a breath. “Fine. You guys really don't want my help?”
“We want you healing. Why don’t you rest just until we come back to the hold and then we can go get the girls and go have our evening meal together.” Rena tempted as Senabena started to take the trays out grinning to herself.
Bensen blew out a frustrated breath. He hated just leaving them but right now he really wasn't any help. “Okay okay,” he finally agreed. “I'll go wait.”
Rena caressed his cheek and smiled. He looked so unhappy but it was for “Thank you.” Rena leaned up and kissed him softly before she ran off to go and help Senabena.
