S'cir carried a tray of mugs toward the records room. Yes, one the drudges could have done this but he wanted to speak with Lana anyhow so he figured it made more sense to do it himself.
He pushed the door open with a foot and stepped into the room, wondering just where he would find everyone.
Lana looked up from the old skins she had put and smiled at the Weyrleader. “Hello S’cir.” She said moving over to take the tray putting it down. She had changed from her flight gear and wore a long thick dress so unlike the dresses of the south but it was a flattering colour even if she felt heavier than when she wore flight gear.
Lana took the tray before he could argue. “Hello Lana. I do hope you are finding what you are looking for.” It had been an odd request by River Cove's Weyrwoman to see their old hides, but they didn't have anything to hide and he got along with Lana and A'ren.
“Not yet but I have only just started.” She smiled sweetly as she set about fixing his mug as well as her own. Her and A’ren had agreed to not ask the Weyrleader straight out so not to risk anything with this Weyr. “How have you been?” She wondered turning the subject on to him.
S'cir nodded. He knew if it was there than Lana would find it. He found a chair and moved it closer to Lana's makeshift desk so they could talk. He hesitated a moment. “Been better but we're getting there.” It had been hard since losing the Weyrwoman.
Lana nodded. She was very surprised that the man was still Weyrleader and that the other wing leaders and bronze riders had not demanded a council until Laliy was old enough. “I was really surprised by what had happened.” Lana admitted. It was not often that a queen rider died like that.
He sighed softly. Things were a mess and he honestly wasn't sure how things would get better. Not for a lot of Turns anyhow since Laliy was still young. “It still doesn't make any sense,” he admitted.
The woman nodded and leaned over touching his hand as she gave over the klah to him. “It doesn’t but it does happen.” Lana reminded. Moreta was a prime example and a warning it seemed which omitted all mention of timing it seemed despite Lana finding 2 versions of the ballad now.
He looked up at Lana, sorrow in his eyes. “Perhaps but it wasn't something we could handle right now. Not with Laliy so young,” he admitted quietly. It had been wherrybrained and nothing that ever should have happened.
“Nope but this is also why we are meant to have more than 2 golden queens.” Lana commented softly knowing she was a perfect example of why that should not happen. “I survived my incident that could have caused the same type of issue as here… but I know the error of my ways.” Lana had not spoken to A’ren but if their were not any golden eggs in either Kalaith or Zalieth’s next clutch Lana was going to open the Weyr up to another junior Queen especially if they had certain skills that the Weyr needed.
S'cir blew out a breath, knowing she was right. “We had only just started talking about that when, well, that sharding flight accident happened.” Micayith was the last gold egg to be hatched. “Now though I am not sure how things are going to go.” Things definitely weren't calm at High Reaches.
Lana smiled sadly. “Do you mind if I ask what happened?” She wondered. She knew it had been a flight accident but there had been no communication just an empty council chair at Fort where the High Reaches Weyrwoman.
The bronze rider sighed softly. They hadn't ever really told anyone but the Weyr what had happened. “It never should have happened. It was a simple training exercise.” He scrubbed at his face. It had been horrible. “One of the weyrlings misjudged a Firestone drop. Normally she could have caught it on instinct, but for some reason this time she wasn't paying attention to the ones around her. The bag hit her instead of being dropped to the brown rider beside her.” He trembled a bit as he thought about it. “Knocked her out of the saddle…” he trailed off.
Lana closed her eyes as she could see the mental image of what had happened. Straps should have stopped that but if straps failed it would have been traumatic for all around them. “That's horrible, I am so sorry that has happened S’cir.” She could understand why the vibe of the Weyr was what it was.
He slowly nodded. No one ever got a chance to see if the straps had failed or what might have caused it as her gold was gone too fast. “It's definitely put a foul mood on everyone here,” he agreed.
“I can see that.” Lana said sadly. She had seen the stares and comments just from walking up to the records room. The bronze riders had been sent to find their Weyrs and check on their dragons.
“Sorry for the way the Weyr is. We're not normally that cold toward visitors.” It had been a bad time for the Weyr and he wasn't sure how they were going to recover.
“This is why A’ren would not let me come alone.” Lana admitted gently letting the man know that it was well known what the atmosphere was to people outside of the Weyr.
S'cir sighed in frustration. “I can understand why he would do that. I am sorry he felt the need for it though.” The Weyr had certainly gone down since the Weyrwoman’s death.
“I thought he was being overprotective but I can see some of why he was worried.” Lana admitted owing her mate an apology of some sort.
“I am sure it was a bit of that too,” S'cir smiled sadly. “He cares for you. As I did Aliyna.” He was glad to see Lana though and hoped she found whatever she was looking for.
“I think he worries you would steal me away.” She said amused. That was the thing she was least worried about. S’cir whilst handsome was not her type at all and he was also a good 20 turns older than her.
“Now that hadn't crossed my mind,” he chuckled softly. “I would not want another Weyr to go through what we are right now.” Not to mention he respected Lana and A'ren too much to even consider that.
“But I have Jena but I do believe that was his biggest worry but it’s far to cold here.” Lana assured grinning. She watched him over her klah and relaxed seeing the man for the first time in the last seven candlemarks of her being there, relaxed and offering a genuine smile.
S'cir sipped on his klah. “You southerners,” he laughed softly. “But yes it can be cold here,” he agreed. It was nice to relax just a little bit. It was the first time in a long time.
“We are warm blooded but just as much dragon riders as you all.” Lana assured liking the way she could see him visibly relaxing. It was nice to see that her presence and company was helping him.
“Never claimed you weren't riders. Don’t think I could handle that heat,” he admitted. He was too used to High Reaches to ever change, but it was nice to talk with Lana like this.
“Certainly do not want this cold all the time but the snow was pretty. Kalaith is very much not impressed with the cold.” Lana chuckled, crossing her legs as she leaned back. “Though I will say a lot of northern riders are adjusting well and certainly enjoyed the Gather at Kymos.” She should have brought some southern goodies for him. Maybe she would send someone after they leave to cheer him up and remind him he was always welcome.
He chuckled. “Yeah the dragons aren't the fondest of the snow. They usually stay buried inside when they can.” His bronze was usually asleep on his couch. “That's good to hear.” He was glad to hear some good news instead of always bad.
“Dragon Hold is gone and the south goes back to normal.” She smiled happily. She could understand staying buried inside the Weyr as it was toasty no matter where she went but with her thick gown and the fur over her lap she was okay.
S'cir nodded. “Yes I heard that. I am glad at least one threat is gone. Riders face enough with Thread let alone adding a place like that.” He could only imagine how the riders at River Cove felt.
“Me too. Can I tell you something? They tried to kill me while Kalaith was on the sands.” Lana reviled gently wanting to discuss it with someone who wasn’t A’ren or the other 2 riders at River Cove who knew about it.
S'cir stared at Lana in disbelief. “They did what?” He asked. Who would ever consider doing something like that? Pern needed their dragons. “I see they failed though which is good.”
“They drugged me and … they would have made it look self-inflicted.” Lana said sadly. “Thankfully F’cone thought something odd and came looking.” Lana had to admit that her body had been through so much no wonder she was actively avoiding getting pregnant.
He slowly shook his head. “That is so wherrybrained. What were they hoping to accomplish?” He nodded a little. “I am glad to hear you were found in time.” He couldn't imagine River Cove without Lana.
“Chaos and confusion. A’ren was already in infirmary with potentially life altering injuries and I was an easy target.” Lana said sadly. “As am I… so I do understand the…” Lana stopped as the door opened and revealed V’ros coming back.
S'cir blinked in surprise. “I didn't realize.” Apparently River Cove was having their own issues. He turned in his chair as the door opened, revealing the two bronze riders.
“We can talk more at the meal you promised me.” Lana said touching the older man’s hand as V’ros smiled. “Hello Bronze Roders.” She greeted them, rising to fix them both some klah.
“I can do that Weyrwoman.” V’ros assured moving to stop her but Lana shook her head.
S'cir nodded. “I look forward for it.”
K'ron smiled. He still hated being away from his family, but if they could find what Lana was looking for they could go home.
