Rena looked around the dining halls she picked at the porridge and sighed at the busyness of the place and the excitement that was on everyone's faces at the gather. She wanted to be happy for them but her mind just kept flashing back to the awful day where Dragon Hold had attacked without remorse. If it had not been for the Weyrleader she herself would have been dead but instead her husband was dead and she was trapped in this existence where she was grieving to honour Oseben and the life they have built over five turns but trying to move on for Brenna and the bump so that they could live.
Her green fire lizard curled around her neck asleep apart from the way she opened her eyes every now and then to see who was coming close to check they were not messing with her pet. She wanted her pet to cheer up and not spend candlemarks crying, she missed the singing and harp playing. It was so quiet now even with the little pet.
Bensen was torn between being happy and grieving. He loved seeing how happy everyone was for the gather but he couldn't help the dark mood that still overtook him from time to time. He needed to not show that though.
He stepped into the Dining Halls and stopped when he saw Rena. She looked so sad and a bit pale. “Ren?” he asked softly.
Rena had just been around to give up on her food when she heard the voice in front of her and saw the man on the other side of the table. She offered a smile to him.
“Good morning.” She greeted taking in his appearance. “Rough night?” She asked trying to perk up. She had left everyone just after the main meal and proper introductions to the Lord Holder. She had a sneaky suspicion that Lady Sena and Lord Oben were trying to set her up which was why she had been requested to come along and leave Brenna behind with the Nabon and Oben.
Bensen pulled out a chair opposite her. “A bit. Stayed up late with Sena then couldn't sleep. You?” He asked, hoping she was doing okay. He knew what his parents were planning and he didn't like it. But for now he would at least be there for Rena.
“I slept okay.” She confirmed pouring him some klah from the containers spread out across the dining hall for everyone to enjoy. “You and Abe plotting things?” She wondered lightly passing the mug to him automatically with a gentle smile as the green firelizard opened her eyes and looked at Bensen before she snuggled back down across her pet’s shoulder. “If you slept on the bed little one you would not be so touchy.” She whispered to the firelizard caressing her small head.
Bensen yawned a bit as he gladly accepted the mug. “Us? Plot? Now why would you ask that?” Of course that had been what they had been doing. He smiled at her little green who had grown extremely protective of her.
“Because I know the pair of you when you have been drinking.” She said simply touching his hand before she pulled back once she saw he had the mug. She wrapped her hands around the simple herbal tea that she had and looked around avoiding his gaze for a moment.
He raised a brow. “Is that a good thing?” He asked. He sipped on his klah, needing something to wake him up. “We were really just talking about something she overheard.”
“Of course it is.” She assured shaking her head at how he looked. She stood and spooned him some porridge into a bowl putting it in front of him. “Eat up before your mother sees you.” She encouraged smiling a little more as wondered what could Senabena overheard to cause him to drink. “And that caused you to drink?” She wondered.
Bensen laughed as Rena got him some porridge. “She'd spoon feed us if she thought she could get away with it,” he smiled. He knew his mother was just worried about them. Bensen hesitated. “Yeah, I guess it did.”
Rena frowned. “I am sorry that you have worries. You and Abe should not be drinking on worries though. You both know better Ben.” She said hoping she was not one of his worries as she never wanted to be that. Senabena and Bensen were the people she would miss the most when she eventually went back to Harper Hall or wherever she ended up.
“It's okay,” he assured her. “It was really just to wind down and it was only two glasses. I promise.” They had been worried but like she said they also knew better. “We were just discussing if we could make things a bit better for everyone.”
“And did you come to some conclusion?” She wondered as she spotted Kymos’ Lord Holder come into the room and sit at the table with several other Lord Holder’s including Oben and Sena.
“Kind of,” he answered, catching sight of his parents. He quickly turned back to Rena. “Can we talk later?” He asked softly.
Rena raised an eyebrow at the older man and nodded. Something was eating at him which she did not like at all when the man was the kindest she knew. “Of course. Catch me when you are ready to do so.” She said seeing Oben smile in their direction and nod. Rena offered the biggest smile she could offer him. It was easier to fool the Lord Holder than his children.
Bensen was sure he was confusing Rena but he didn't want to broach the subject just yet. not with everyone else around. “I will,” he assured her, nodding at his parents.
Rena nodded and turned back to her porridge With one final look at the man across from her. She ate a few slow mouthfuls contemplating the day before she put the spoon down rubbing her stomach with a little discomfort from where the baby was lying. It was going to be a long day.
