Neilla was determined she was going to catch K’ron before he left. She needed to know what was going on properly. She had bribed the watch pair to wake her when it was dawn and she had gotten up dressed and ran down to the dining cavern getting there as she spotted the bronze rider just settling down with porridge. The younger woman quickly grabbed up her own breakfast and joined him. “Thought you’d have had company.” She admitted sitting down opposite him knowing she did not have long before the Weyrwoman and Weyrlingmaster 2nd most likely joined him.
It had taken everything in K'ron to climb out of bed in the morning. He didn't want to leave Nerlyn for a couple days even if it was at the request of the Weyrleaders. He drug his feet as long as he could before he got dressed in a hurry and headed down for a quick breakfast. He looked up quickly at the unexpected voice. “Neilla? What are you doing up this early?”
“Bribed the watch pair so I could catch you before you went. Breakfast is just an added bonus.” She admitted telling him honestly why she was there as she dug into the porridge. It was fresh and nice as she had expected it to be from the night hearth so something nice and fresh was good. “
K'ron took a bite of his own porridge, barely tasting it. “Me? What did you need?” He asked, wondering just why she would get up so early and what could be so important. Koda cheeped sleepily from his perch on K'ron's shoulder.r.
Neilla raised an eyebrow and that man. “What is going on between you and Nerlyn? Could have cut the tension with a knife and now you are off leaving the Weyr for a couple of days before most of the Weyr stirs..” She commented having seen Tyreth with a pack on.
He should have known that Neilla would catch on. Unfortunately, he could only say so much. “The Weyrwoman requested my presence on this trip north,” he explained. “Just some things from the past we're taking care of and Ner is afraid I will get hurt there.”
“Nerlyn doesn’t just worry you are going to get hurt and act like that when you go into threadful but I am guessing you cannot tell me much because you are acting a little shifty like you know who stole the meat rolls but you can’t tell because the other weyrbrats will beat you up.” Neilla sighed and rested her spoon down looking at him. “Is it worth it?” She asked.
The bronze rider slowly nodded. “I'm sorry, Neilla. I really wish I could say more and I wish I wasn't leaving Ner like this. I hate it and it's making me crazy.” Even now he didn't want to leave but he had to. “It is,” he answered.
“Okay then.” Whatever it was had to be big for him to have those big emotions and still leave. “Do not kid yourself. You have always been crazy.” Neilla said fondly, sitting up properly to prepare herself for the next question she had. “So how bad is she?” She finally asked.
K'ron raised a brow. “Seriously?” He asked with a small chuckle. Yes, he could be crazy at times. He slowly shook his head. “Not good. She's barely above where she had been a month ago. She's taken quite a few steps back.”
Neilla smiled and nodded before she frowned. She had suspected it but to hear it from the man who knew her sister better than her hurt. “Is she safe?” She asked looking at her porridge a little disinterested now.
K'ron completely understood why Neilla was asking that question. “I think so,” he answered. “She's depressed but I don't think she'll try anything. Not with Raen.” If nothing else he knew she would stay for their son.
“By the first egg how has she stepped so far back?” She wondered, shaking her head. Raen was the best thing that ever happened to Nerlyn other than being a rider. “Or the baby? Is that a factor in any of this?”
“I don't know. It seems like when things from her past were brought up it just sent her in a spiral.” He was still a bit angry at the Weyrleaders for that. “No, she was excited about the baby.”
Neilla had no idea what bit of Nerlyn’s past could have sent her into such a deep spiral. “Then I need to try and get her out of the spiral then?.” Neilla sighed, taking another bite. “And now?” She wondered having felt hopeful about the baby when Nerlyn had looked and sounded so healthy.
He nodded, hating having to leave Neilla with that worry. It just wasn't fair. K’ron looked up at Neilla. “but if you need anything let me know. I will come right back.” He didn't care. He wouldn't lose Nerlyn now. “She's still excited,” he answered.
“I am fully capable of handling Ner. I have a sister and 2 parents. I am not alone in kicking her forward a few steps and neither are you,” She reminded him gently. N’raen and Lyna would be horrified to know all this. “Good. She should be excited as should you. How are you doing about being a dad of 2 when I suspect you never thought life would turn out like this?” She wondered quietly.
K'ron actually smiled a bit. “I have no doubt you are capable of handling whatever she throws at you. I just hate leaving her like this.” That was the part that really bothered him. He wanted to be there for her. He shook his head a bit. “Must admit I never expected anything lIke this but I can't wait. I couldn't imagine my life without Raen and now we are having a second one.”
“Well we are riders and we do have to do what our dragons and Weyrleaders require.” She said quietly. “It’ll be okay.” It was the thing she envied the most about Nerlyn that she got the chance to parent her children along with K’ron being there for Nerlyn. She still even after a turn had no idea where it went wrong with H’minle but those thoughts never led anywhere good especially just after dawn. “Well neither could I. Which is strange when my own daughter barely acknowledges me whilst Raen yells my name across the Weyrbowl.” She smiled genuinely happy about the little boy.
It was true. The dragons and Weyrleaders did dictate a lot of their lives, but he wouldn't change it. He loved Tyreth. As awful as it had been when Leaneth had passed between, he was also grateful to get a chance to raise their son with Nerlyn. “He does love his family,” K’ron smiled. “it still feels very odd to be able to help raise him though.”
“I bet it does. For all the sadness and anger at the time I can’t imagine not having that little boy so connected in all our lives.” Neilla agreed. “It was the best outcome from that day.”
K'ron nodded. “I am grateful every day for that little boy,” he agreed. Raen had helped heal them all. Just hopefully they could keep moving forward.
“I… looks like your fellow escapees are here.” Neilla said, indicating the door where Lana and V’ros came in. It was strange to see Lana in flight gear outside of fighting thread but it was good to see her after the injury. Lana offered a wave across the distance and got her own porridge moving to join them with V’ros in tow.
He followed her finger and nodded. So it began. “Guess I don't have much more time,” he sighed as the others moved to join them. He knew it was important but it was still hard to leave.
“I will leave you 3 alone to plan.” Neilla said, starting to gather her bowl and spoon up to leave. She smiled politely and nodded at Lana.
“You do not need to leave Neilla.” Lana said quickly.
“It’s fine. I was just catching up with K’ron.” She stated quickly shutting down any of the questioning around it.
“Take care Neilla. And thank you.” At least he knew Nerlyn would be safe with Neilla around. “Good morning,” he said to the others.
“Anytime.” Neilla walked away smiling. She was happy with how the boring had gone but she very much had to speak to Lyna and N’raen.
