Kalana sighed as she stretched out on the couch as she tried to get comfortable in the heat. She was not at all happy with her attempts but there was nothing else she could do as she could not curl up with Verith on her stone couch as she was not entirely convinced she would be able to get back up with the couch she at the very least could use the wall to drag herself up.
S'laten had finished his duties for the day and hurried back to his weyr. He hated leaving Kalana when he knew she was so close to giving birth. Which is exactly why he hurried back to the weyr. “Kal?” He called softly.
“You sound worried. I am exactly where you left me before sweeps.” She assured awkwardly moving so he could sit down. He looked spent and exhausted.
S'laten tried not to laugh at those words. He knew moving had gotten hard for her. The bronze rider collapsed by his mate with a sigh. “Good. Was just worried.”
“Where do you think I am going to run off to hmm?” She asked, collapsing back on his lap, looking up at him. “Your big child has made it impossible.” She added just to remind him.
He moved his arm to let her lay back on his lap. S'laten laughed a bit. “As you have reminded me,” he smiled, setting a hand on her stomach. “You hear that little one? You're getting daddy in trouble already.”
As if hearing the comment the baby kicked under his hand hard making Kalana winced a little. “I still like you.” Kalana assured as if that was in any doubt.
S'laten winced for Kalana when the baby kicked. “Shards I am glad you don't have much longer. That was a wicked kick.”
“I have no idea how they have space like that to kick.” But every kick reminded her that the baby was okay and she was doing a great job of keeping herself healthy.
He shook his head. He couldn’t even begin to guess. “Is there anything you need?” He offered. He tried to be there as much as he could for Kalana.
“Nope… this is perfect for a moment.” She assured, knowing that eventually he would need to wash up or she would need the bathroom, but like that she knew that everything was perfect.
S'laten smiled. “Good cause I am quite happy right here.” He loved having the time to spend with Kalana like this.
Kalana looked up at him and reached up to touch his cheek, rubbing a smudge off his cheek. “Me too.” She assured. “Fave place… right next to you.”
He closed his eyes at her gentle touch. He probably looked like a wreck, but right now he didn't care. “And I get to have you close,” he grinned.
“Much easier like this than bed,” She laughed, knowing it was difficult to sleep together right then and there, many nights she had found the bronze rider asleep on the sofa.
“That is true,” he smiled. Over the past few sevendays it had been getting more uncomfortable to sleep in the same bed. “I like this much better.”
“Soon you can snuggle back with me.” She laughed letting her hand drop to her stomach as she wiggled a little onto her side feeling a bit dizzy.
“I look forward to that,” he smiled, leaning down to kiss her forehead. He moved his arm to let her get comfortable. “You okay?”
“Feeling dizzy.” She admitted taking a deep breath in trying to focus. “Yeah I am going to have to sit up.” She admitted breaking the moment as she scrambled to sit up.
S'laten quickly moved to help her sit up. “What do you need?” He asked, getting worried. She looked pale to him.
“Just to sit up. I’ve laid too long on my back.” She sighed, swinging her feet around so she sat up properly leaning forward. “If it doesn’t go in a few moments we can go see the healers.”
He kept an arm protectively around her. “Okay. You let me know what needs done,” he said, trying to stay calm.
“Some deep breaths for you S’laten.” She laughed leaning over a little more as she took in her own deep breaths trying to clear her vision and the sickly feeling that dizziness brought on.
S'laten laughed a bit as he tried to follow her example. Yes he was worried. He couldn't help it.
Kalana smiled at hearing him take in some deep breaths. “Okay help me up.” She said not likening that the feeling was not leaving her as quick as she liked. “Maybe some air and sunshine will help.”
The bronze rider quickly moved to help her to her feet. He didn't like how pale she looked. “Are you sure you shouldn’t go to the infirmary?” He asked worriedly.
The woman stood to her feet and swayed a little. “Okay… we will go.” She promised softly wanting to stop the worried tone coming from the man.
He put an arm around her waist, steadying her as they walked. “Thank you,” he said, having Dirith let one of the healers know they were coming.
The woman smiled sadly as he led them down to the infirmary and eventually to where Terliyn was sitting waiting for them. “Bit of a surprise hearing Dirith talking to me.” She said by way of greeting as she took Kalana’s arm to steady her till then could get to the a cot.
S'laten made sure to take most of Kalana's weight. “Sorry Terliyn. Wasn't sure what else to do,” he admitted, just wanting Kalana to be okay.
“It’s okay. Now what is going on? You don’t look like you are in labour?” Terliyn knew labour after 2 children.
“I just feel dizzy. I was lying down and it just swept over me.” She admitted. Terliyn nodded helping her lie back a little keeping her head above her heart for a moment.
S'laten stayed back. There wasn’t really much he could do to help. He tried not to pace though and let Terliyn do her job.
“I am just going to listen to the baby.” Terliyn assured getting the instruments that she needed and crouched by the cot. She apologised as the cool metal horn touched the small woman’s skin. “The baby’s heartbeat is nice and steady but yours is a little fast but you’ve been out in the sun and walking here. Let me get you some juice and let’s get you resting for a candlemark and then we can go from there.”
“She's okay though?” S'laten asked worriedly. He was a nervous wreck and he was sure that wasn't helping Kalana at all.
“I am fine.” Kalana said, rolling her eyes as she turned on her side and held out her hand. “Stop worrying.” She pleaded.
“I can't. I want to know you're safe,” he said, twining his fingers through hers.
The fact he said specifically her instead of her and the baby warmed her straight through and made Terliyn smile as she disappeared off to get juice.
“You need to.” She said quietly.
He blew out a breath. “I'm trying,” he promised. He just wanted her safe and comfortable again.
“Otherwise you are going to end up here and where will that leave us hmm?” She demanded. Kalana hated seeing him worrying. Who knew that S’laten had developed such a worry streak?
“Good point,” he agreed, letting his breathing settle. They didn't both need to be at the healers.
“Drink this Green rider and we shall see how you are in a candlemark.” Terilyn said, smiling at the pair. “Relax S’laten. What is bothering you so much?” She asked quietly.
He had finally calmed down a little bit when Terliyn returned. “Sorry. I was just worried about Kalana. She went from being comfortable to dizzy so fast.”
Kalana smiled sleepily on her side ignoring the juice. “It can happen like that, especially lying on your back. The weight of the uterus can compress the vena cava, a major blood vessel so that’s likely what happened but they both seem fine and I will monitor them for a little bit. Why don’t you go wash up?” She advised seeing the dirt on his cheek and clothes.
Not all that made sense to him but if Terliyn was sure Kalana was alright then he didn't have a reason to question her. The bronze rider nodded reluctantly. “I should probably do that, huh?”
“She won’t be going anywhere for a bit.” Terliyn said mostly because it looked like the woman was falling asleep. “If anything changes in the time you are gone we will let you know.” She promised as she grabbed out the Pinard horn to check the fetal heart.
He nodded, still reluctant to leave. “I won't be long,” he promised, smiling a bit when he realized Kalana was falling asleep.
“Course.” Terliyn shooed him away, turning back to the woman and started to listen to the baby intently. Still nice and steady heart beat but she suspected it would not be long until she was in labour.
S'laten nodded and rushed out of the infirmary. He didn't want to be gone long.
